What Mod Should I Try First?

Hello all,

I played Freelancer a while back and had a lot of fun with it. I am currently brushing it off to try again and wanted to try a mod(s) with it this time.

I would like to play the single player campaign in story mode. Any suggestions on the best mod or group of mods I should apply?

Thanks in advance and great site!

Evolutions is good if you liked the original FL game play. I think most people regard it as "what Freelancer should have been". Most other mods add tons of new stuff, change the balance, lack balance, or are so combat focused it breaks the non-combat aspects of game play.

Beyond that, yeah, I like Monkey's Universe. Its heavy combat with humans, nomads, monkeys, and robots. I think its well balanced, doesn't take itself too seriously, and seems to be more fun than many other mods.

Crossfire is pretty cool too, lots of new systems to explore and a fair amonut of combat. Decent number of ships, decent balance, and as mods go it has an interesting storyline.

WTS has tons of ships from pretty much all sci-fi genres. I haven't played the Massive addon yet, so I don't know which is better.

If you want really insane balance, TNG has a very linear progression. It attempts to balance everything by using reputation so expect to spend a lot of time getting friendly with various factions to get more powerful ships. Of all the mods out there this one might have the most powerful ships available. It gets kind of pointless after you get the best ship in the game.

Hunters2 has some interesting stuff in it too.

Welcome back and have fun...
