Torpedoes on the vanilla game..

Hi all. I'm now playing the vanilla open game (story finished, just exploring the galaxy) and I was asking me a question: Do the torpedoes have any utility? I mean, in the story maybe you will need them, as there are some battleships which has to be destroyed, but in the open game?
The torpedoes are designed to beat capital ships. All right, you can use them in a "kill the enemy base" mission, but it's a waste of money, as those bases are not too strong and with over four or five passes firing you lasers the base it's out. In addition, each torpedo it's over 7k, and the kill the base missions are ovr the 20k, so it's not too much profitable spend that amount of money in a torpedo..
In addition, in the vanilla game there are no "kill the battleship" missions, so, why I should buy a torpedo launcher?

P.S.: I completed the story without a torpedo launcher, so even in the story I can't see it's utility...

I usually keep my torpedo launcher and a few torpedoes after the SP game ends. Only use for them is just to occasionally fire one into an attacking ship at close range for the fun of it. It can really blast them to bits.

But no, there isn't any reason for them once you finished the story line.

if you play online you will find a lot of players using them in pvp and pvm, if fired correctly they are devistating

But even in single player they are a good source of damage for the harder enemies ie BH/Outcast/Corsairs in the edge systems

Torpedos in MP are fantastic as long as u use them right.
On modded servers with ships with 2 torp/cruise disruptor points..i'd carry 1 torp,1 CD as CD's tend to blow up torpedos...which is their main drawback...especially as 1 sunslayer can kill u

Torpedo launchers are also of use in the canned "Destroy Base" mission contracts.

Well, I wouldn't say they are that useful...

A single shot from all my guns did more damage than my sunslayer, and my guns fire faster...

But that's just me

Ah, but torps can be fired from farther away- and the faster you're going when you launch them, the more damage they'll do when they hit. That and I won't fly anything that can carry enough guns to rival that sort of firepower...

I prefer mines, though.

I'm a bit in the same situation than Xen()morph.. in addition, the description of the torpedo says: "Them are very slow". At least, in SP you dn't have much problems against other fighters, and in addition, them cost over 7k.. well, I prefer to spend 5 minutes in a 5v1..

So thanks for the pvp tips, I'll try 'em when I'll finish the exams ^^u. As long as I read, the torpedoes in sp aren't profitable, so I'll keep the cruise disruptor (another weapon that you use over very few times :p)

Torpedo firing method

In Free flight using thrusters thrust to maximum speed and then fire. Then the torpdeo has the maximum speed you have, so its nearly treble the speed of the normal torpdeo.

With practice if you take out a ships shields then a single hit from a torpedo is nearly a instant kill and thats not using Sunslayers just the standard Star Killers.

not all torps ar 7K, they are good for people who dont have level 10 ships and nomad weapons.
