Freighters - can they cut it?

Thinking of getting a freighter and try some of these cargo runs. The thing that is holding me back is that I don't think they are good on defence? My rep in the Sigma sectors is pretty low with the bad guys, so low that the last time I was on the trade lane from Freeport 1 (?) to the Jump Gate I got three trade lane disruptions, first time 6 - 8 Daggers, then 4 - 6 Stilettos then 4 Centurions. My Barracuda was limping a bit by the time I got to the Jump Gate, no flares or shield batteries left - any more bad guys and it would have been a bit dodgy.

So should I look to paying a bribe first then getting a freighter, or just stick with my new Falcon as it has a 60 capacity cargo bay, and concentrate on the highest value goods?

With Freighters, just avoid the traditional areas that are patroled. May take longer, but you still get there. he save and get good shields and weps.

If you are going to get a freighter
a) make sure it has good weopons and shield.

b) stay away from heavly pirated systems(rhiendland if you are a good player (lots of baddies), bretionia if you are bad(bounty hunters)

c)learn dirrerent escape ways like cuting engine and repeatedly tapping TAB, if you do this right you can stay at 200meters a second for ever.

d) remember if you have 1 or 2 liberty rouges on your tail, take them out. If you have 5 corsayers run for the nereast allies (base, potrol path).

e) save alot, start off in easy systems and if you are in MP were you loose cargo if you die, don't put all your eggs in one basket

I had some fun in a Drone, which is a considered freighter but is almost a fighter. Handles well and carries some decent firepower.

Still, best defence in a freighter is to go where the bad guys ain't!

Always have a calculater nearby makes things a lot easier.
Get used to your ship, the first time I did SP mode I used the Rhino for a few missions and it worked as a fighter, but the humpback is not so good, takes forever to turn so you have to rely on your turrets.

If you want to make it really worth your while, you almost have to go with either the Dromedary or the Humpback. They're the only two that have both the armor and weapons for exploring/fighting and the cargo capacity to pull in the big paydays.

But if you get adventurous, try the Mule. It's a fun little ship, makes ya feel like a real freelancer (you know...broke, flying around in a ship that looks as if it's held together with duct tape, with half the sector pissed at you ). Great fun, those lower-level ships are.

thanks for all the tips and advice. I'm going to stick with the Hammerhead (that I just bought) as I forgot to mention that I keep taking these assass. missions and every one of the bad guys are p***ed at me. The Falcon started to show some signs of wear when I just got made up to level 31. Up until now the enemy were just half a dozen stilettos and a few falcons, or 8 centurions but now the sound of their weaps has changed and the Falc. was taking a lot of damage - so as I was passing thru the sector that sells Hammeheads, and I had the cash, I thought it was time to move on. Not bad cargo for a fighter.
