Talk to people in the bases. You will find out all sorts of useful information -- e.g. where lost wrecks are, which are good areas to mine in, why disasters happened etc. I remember that at the very beginning of the SP game, a Liberty policeman told me that Liberty was going to try to protect the ruins of the station, even though it would be difficult out in the Sigma systems. And that was in the bar right after I had spoken to Juni and had yet to go to the equipment yard to get the ship for mission 1! Talk to people.
