Freelancer Multiplayer

What are the goals when we play in multiplayer? Can we still do the main quest? What should I do to make my game intertaining?

There is no story line in Mp although all the featurs are unlcoked at the start.
I guess the goal is to earn lots of $$$$$$$$$$ and get a good ship.
