Beat this game without cheating. No homemade mods, or anything, just went and played how it was intended. I tryed but it was just too hard man.
I agree. I got blown up a few times, but overall, I'd say it's not too difficult to complete the plot missions without mods. Actually Privateer was harder. You weren't shepherded through the toughest missions by a bunch of experienced navy pilots and battleships popping in to save the day.
"Buckle up boys, we're headed to the Omicron Gamma System!"

ive beaten it a couple of times and ive never died on a story mission
ive only died dumb ways like taking on too hard a mission or discovering these boxes in space called depots around new london, sooting them to get the loot, and when they wont explode turning around and seeing all the red law enforcers
thats when i first learned what a cruise disrupter did
"If im phased and can walk through stuff, then why am I not falling through the floor?"

i've played through the game twice and didn't cheat on both ocations, though in the end of the game, i use IRONCROSS to edit my player money and made all ememies neutral so i can explore without having to fight off waves after waves of Outcasts.
the only time i got blown up was the first time i had to take out the weapon platform (the mission where you are first going with the mad guys, and you got to destroy the weapon platforms to hijack the train transport to get this strone) i flow stright at the platform and fired 3 torpidos, and i collided with it while the torpidos explored, taking me with it

<< Actually Privateer was harder. >>
Much as I loved Privateer, I HATED those asteroid fields! You would almost always get jumped in them, and if you flew carefully the baddies killed you. If you went after the baddies at high speed, it was 50-50 you'd collide with an asteroid and go KA-BLOOEY! Plus if you got killed on a mission, you hard to start the whole @#%&!! mission over at the beginning, not where you got wasted as in FL.
FL is decidedly an easier game than Privateer in that respect.
p.s. I've been blown up twice when playing FL on a mission to rescue a prominent politician. (Say no more!) Problem is I chased a bad guy too far and strayed into the mine field.

micahd, nice you are so eager.
Take your time when you play FL the first time. The natural reaction is to race through it as quickly as you can. But Juni will wait when she tells you to come for a mission. Go exploring and make money for better ships and shields. It will make the missions easier when you do go to do what Juni wants. I love it when Juni says, "Trent ... I need you on this missions" -- and Trent replies, "I'll think about it". Spoken like a man!
