None. It keeps saying "mission" from time to time, which is confusing but normal. Levels are based on current worth, and after having finished the campaign, the value given as required for next level is the _additional_ worth you have to accumulate to level up.
Which boils down to: Keep trading and flying missions (those you can get in bars via the job board or by talking to people), and you will level up.

Er... if you're referring to the big one (spanning about one third of screen width), that's your shield indicator, telling you it's time to dodge some shots.

I _think_ it's supposed to level your ship with the plane the FL 'universe' is constructed around. If you were flying a real aircraft, it would be like aligning it with the horizon - which is nonsense in space since there's no up or down.
