Nomad

Does anyone remember a space sim called Nomad? I got it free when I registered my first pc game back around 1995. I don't remember the company that made it.
It had a lot of similarities to Privateer and Freelancer. You had to trade, explore and get along with a lot of different races in order to fully equip your ship and finish the game. One race (the Arnen, I think) had the best shields and looked and sounded sort of like Wookies), another race had the best missiles, and there was a race of marauders who would attack you if you had some good cargo.

I wonder if the Nomads in FL are a sort of tribute to that game. Anybody have any info on this?

I think Nomads were named 'Nomads' - because of what the word stands for, and what it means.

Nomads - roaming (usually) desolate places, without any fixed point of origin - severed from society (in many ways) etc.

I believe that Freelancer was heavily influenced by the great game, Elite.

Now there was an excellent open-ended game. Too bad it was made back in '85 or so, back in the Commodore 64 era.

Yup, it's roots are in Privateer and Elite. Makes sense since Chris Roberts designed those games, and although he left DA before FL was done, he was the creator of it and was the instigator of the openendedness and mouse control only.

Nomad? That sounds more like X-Beyond the Frontier.

You can find Elite PC versions if you Google. Of course, the graphics look pretty simple now. Elite is probably my all time favourite game! I played it on a 48 kb Sinclair Spectrum. Stayed up playing it way too late many a night.
