What''s the target view for?

Topic says most, really. I assume that when you have targeted a huge battleship/base or something else big, then the missiles will track the sub-target (e.g. targeted turret). But what is the meaning of target view when you have selected a normal (small) ship? Does the missiles track the specific part of the ship (weapon, shield, countermeasure dropper, thruster, you name it)?

Target view is an advanced sensor option. You can use it to target specific parts of a ship so that your guns will be focused on a part of a ship instead of the general body of the ship. You can also use target view to check if a wreck is looted from long range. This is essential for getting Ripper mines easily. Also, target view will allow you to see what ship your target has even if they're not within sensor range.

If you're good at PvPs, try to target something of value on your opponent's ship and shoot it off. Repeat if target is still alive. Can be quite funny sometimes

Also, when you have the little screen up and run a scan on the same ship, you get a cool little image of red lines criss-crossing the vessel in question. --- VH16

Most ships will explode before losing wings and fins. However, certain parts of a ship that have no use can be easily shot off. The middle wing of the eagle, the bottom fin of a titan, the top fin of a hammerhead, the fins of a drake, wings of a starflier, etc.

if that was multiplayer, all he has to do is to kill himself to get his mounted stuff back.

How can you see wether or not a wreck is looted?

¡¡¡VivaHispaña16!!!: Cool effect!

VroomZo: Do you get back your mounted stuff when you die? I have been killed many times and lost my Tizonas, Nomad Blasters etc.

You do get your stuff back, if you haven't landed anywhere else in the meantime. But there are still players out there who don't know of this yet, so it can be quite amusing to shoot off their sunslayer launcher and read the names calling in the chat window

doubleclick a wreck in your object list. you'll go into target view, if guns are still mounted on a ship, obviously, the wreck is unlooted.

and if you die, you are returned to the state you were in on the last base you undocked from minus your cargo and unequiped stuff.

Try having a close friend shoot the wings off a hawk fighter using this. You'll loose most of your mounts, but you'll get a sleek ship that's wicked hard to hit. --- VH16
