Why Play Freelancer?

A couple of days back a friend of mine came over to my place. he is a pc-game fanatic. so i showed him freelancer. he played for a while & said the game sucked. & asked me why do i even play a game like that. well i replyed the game is great. well that was that, but what baffled me was the simplicity of the question, why. i mean yea i am bored of playing the game & i also dont play in MP but i still play it. i spent some time thinking of a good answer but came up with none. can someone answer me WHY we play freelancer?

Peace Out

Well, the game is just so different than other games. There is so much you can do in FL that you cannot do in other games. Another thing is the great storyline, I don't know about you, but that part really drew me in to the game. Ya sure, it got boring after you played it five times, but what makes you even want to play the game five times is part of the mystery. The other big thing is the mods that many of us make for the game. They add so much and some even create whole new places for us to explore. All that I can really say is that DA made a great game that attracts us to it and makes us want to play it.

Dunno, just my opinion.

It is open ended, plus you can decided what kind of pilot you want to be -- trader, privateer, whatever. Even within the story line, you can try different ships, ignore Juni and go off exploring etc. You can be creative.

Now some people do not like this! I remember when FL first came out, some doufas posted here about how the game was ##@! and he wanted his money back because he had finished SP and didn't have anyone telling him what to do anymore. Seems he expected just another linear game with everything mapped out for you. Without Juni or King to lead him by the hand, he was lost and insisted it was the games fault -- not his.

Takes all kinds.

I still like it, because it is moddable. Even after several story line playings, I can get a mod and do it differently. With or without a story line. But the thing is, you have to like space sims to play them. I dislike FPS's so i tend to not play them. To each, his own.

It all comes down to role playing for me. In real life, I cannot be a terrorist making a one man stand against the full navy of the United States for the sake of the forgotten and abused working classes, least not yet. Freelancer allows me to do that, and to blow some stuff up to boot. Plus, the whole open ended universe, the thrill of discovering cool stuff, the quite lengthy pieces of reading material on fictional yet fascianting factions, and just cruising arround in a space craft through a beautifully rendered universe apeal to me. If your friend can't comprehend that, then I pity him, for he will never know the true joys and pleasures of freelancer. --- VH16

I liked the storyline the first time through, but the open SP mods were what drew me in, and the big MODs is what drags me away from other games (Doom 3, Deus Ex, SS2... just to drop some names...) Good fun and better now that i've got a better rig!

Well, some peoples game favorites are different.

The only reason why you play something - is because its fun/enjoyable, and passes the time - like watching TV. I don't watch TV, i play games. TV is particularly boring over here - but just like some people watch their favourite soap because its enjoyable, we play a game because its enjoyable. Like TV, where you watch other stuff - we play other stuff too - but remain true to the thing that brings you the most pleasure. JUST like TV, we all have ones we like, and dislike - and we cannot specify why - we just DO!

I was very indesisive about buying freelancer. I wasn't a big fan of space sims at all. I brought it beacuse it was open ended and promised much to explore. After playing lots of morrowind, i needed something where i could go out on my own for a while and just explore. The mouse control also pulled me in. I'm a bit of a spanner when it comes to complicated controls and reading it was mouse only i knew i could play it.

What i didn't count on was the SP storyline. I have played the SP from start to finish more times than i can count. Being the type of gamer that i am, i now really only buy a game if its going to have a good story. Although i do, on the odd occasion buy what i call a relaxing game, like Manhunt. No real logic behind it but very funny to play.

I would lend your friend your copy of freelancer(after you've played it too bits) and tell him to play through the SP storyline. I'm sure he will enjoy it. However, as others have said, if space sims aren't your thing, no point in really trying to get him to like it.

There also is the possibility that Lith's friend, not having thought to buy the game first, HAD to tell Lith the game stank.... 'cause HE wasn't the first to get it and didn't like the idea that Lith had found a game that was good before he was able to.

FL is a great game. Here's hoping that there is an FL2!

the forced story line, the levelling system , the repetitive missions and the fact that you can not be member of a faction are the weakest spots of the game

Apart from that the game is great

Why play FL?

Because nothing is as relaxing as watching ships blow up. Taking out a Sabre and cutting a swath through the entire sector, to the extent where loot is everywhere, and an obvious loot trail is left for traders to scoop up, is great relaxation. There is nothing better than to hear the pilots screaming as their ships blow up, and then selling the loot for profit.

PvP is good fun as well. Seeing how good you really are compared to other people, and seeing how others arm their ships differently is fun. Seeing people master different combat techniques, like using torps in combat, is cool as well, especially knowing how long it took them to master it.

But the real reason I play FL is because it is the best Space Sim out there. I have played the Roberts brothers games since Wing Commander 1, and they just do it right.

The only other game I really play is Madden football. But 90% of my free time is spent on FL, and that will not change until a better similar type of game comes out.
