Spot the delibrate mistake?

It's probably been pointed out already, but it can't help but bug me (Being English).

Trent is supposed to be Bretonian, the Bretonians being a rather Americanised stereotype of the British, horrific English accents that are so obviously an American talking (At least to a native Englishman), and cheesy outfits copied loosely from English dress sense from 50 years ago (News flash, our police DON'T wear those tall hats anymore, they phased them out 5 years ago at least).

Not to mention the gothic architecture which has more in common with Italian Catherdrals than downtown England.

Regardless though, my main point is that if Trent is Bretonian, raised Bretonian and only been out of town for a few months before the game starts... why is he the walking definition of an American hero, complete with American accent?

Post Mon Aug 16, 2004 9:02 am

Would you rather he had a monacle?

Post Mon Aug 16, 2004 9:04 am

Yeah now thats an idea!... shame you can't edit (Easily) the player character models... Trent with a Monacle! ^_^

Maybe do some changes to his speech too... throw in a bit of "Pip pip" and "Jolly good show old chap" :p

Anyway, my main jip isn't that he isn't English enough, rather me being forced to play as an all American hero... *Has a low opinion of American foreign policy and their "heroes"*

problably he's more american than british is simple. Are there not more americans to buy something than there are british. So if your microsoft(R) wouldn't you want it to appeal to the most pocket books

Imagine Hugh Grant doing Trents voice over! *shakes head* It would have been nice to have a british actor to do Trent and actual british people to do the voice overs for the NPC's but thats the way it went. Being british myself, it is mildly annoying, but DA and MS did a great job and the BH90210 guy did a great job too. At least i think thats what he was in

being British myself i have noticed this, the Bretonion Women do sometimes have a hint of a British accent, but also some bretonion companys pilots cant say "EDINBURGH"

Butt den again cornsider how fer in da future all is & maybe it all became homoginized.

Also, go back & chicken my thread about Sidewinder Fang. This another bit of oddity.

Maybe since they thought that the main market would be Americans they thought they shouldn't go to hardcore on the pom stuff but i do see you point.

Lol, though it could be funny.

So? The Rheinlanders mispronounce German, the Kusari mispronounce Japanese and the Corsairs mispronounce Spanish.

The game was made in Texas. Be happy that everybody doesn't sound like HOVIS!

Yeehaw!!!

Trent's been hanging in the Border worlds, the equivlent of the frontier. He would loose his accent with time. I'm sure he sounded like tobias at one point, but look at any of the Empire's (England's) frontiers, the further you are from home, the more you sound it.

And it's a shame about Hispania. They loose their ñ! A whole letter!

anyone for a slap for being so bloody stupid?

Post Fri Aug 20, 2004 3:46 am

*slaps ff*

Yeah, you need one

And me having lived in the UK for 7 years, I did notice this dodgy little side thing. But I do think that the game wouldn't of sold as much as it has if the guys accent is british. It's just stupid enough that they do speak perfect english (with a little stupid accent) in Rheinland and Kusari.

I dread to think what a British colony would be like, considering the fact that almost anyone in a position of power in the UK has been to snobby public (pay) school, or comes from a privileged background.

Those same snobs, that are hated by the majority (~90%) of us 'normal' Brits would make sure that only they and their ilk got all the places on the British sleeper ship.

You'd have a colony of loathsome, arrogant imbeciles that would rapidly fall apart without the people that keep this country going to prop them up!
