History of TLR

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

I'd like to hear them all. Perhaps these times were the "Dark Ages" of TLR, and deserve a place in the history books. Any of you with stories from the beginning, do tell, please!

The Great Flame War... You call it that way now?
It all happened when you were having your sabbatical from TLR Arcon.

Let ol' Grandpa Wiz tell his story:
We're a Freelancer community, but there are more space games nowadays. Earth&Beyond, X2 and EVE-online. The problem is, these games can't be compared. I don't want to go into details so just believe me. The problem was, some EVE and X2 trolls came here and started flaming and spamming or some of our 'members' started there, I don't know. It showed how immature some people are. It was a crazy time, people were banned, got insulted and even TLR got hacked or ddos-ed when I'm right. Stinger started posting on the X2 forum and some of their moderators came here to try and calm everybody down. I even thought about quitting TLR for good because I was sick and tired of all those personal insults.

But then Tachyon (start posting here again!) posted the State of the Lancer Union. (Remember, some people like me, big E and FF weren't mods back there)
After that topic (please don't revive it) it all kinda stopped, FL went gold and we got stuck with you guys after that

Oh man I'd almost forgotten about that, that whole period really pissed me off. There were really just a couple of bad eggs stirring up trouble around then. I had yet to earn my stripes but the Mods had a really rough time, especially EB and Stinger.

I remember the days when we'd only get 1 or 2 posts a week in the FL discussion forum and getting three screenshots would cause a ripple of orgasmic pleasure and minute analysis in the forum. Though the E3 movies got the most hearts fluttering. It's funny looking at that thread though, there are a lot of really cool people in there who never post here anymore. Bit of a shame really.

People come and go, but thats just human nature. but i just hope they remember their time at TLR.

Ah yes, I remember that 'dark' period vividly We had several discussions that year about TLR's general status actually, for instance the one I started....TLR's position

In that thread Bargib actually admitted that at one point he considered closing TLR.

It's all coming back to me now...

oops - and I was so naive thinking the great flame war was the top-level flaming between Reynen (Starfyre) and his fellas against the Michael (Dan's) ReBalance Guild against etc.etc.etc. about stealing ideas, concepts, etc.etc.
(btw: anybody NOT involved there ??)

I don't care a beep beep about my rank

edit: editing brackets. I'm about to start another flame war concerning the conclusion of [ (insert typo here..) not working in TLR for ages

I do consider myself a n00b to this site(only been here since april) but reading the two links to the flame wars and the quality of posts, i'm very much glad TLR did stay. I visit the site at least 4 times every day just to see whats going on. I think all the mods and Bargib made the right choices. From just my short stay here in TLR, i haven't made friends here yet, but would certainly like to do so with so many nice people on here. It may also come as a surprise but i was a n00b with forums as well as the site itself. I never signed up to any forums so this is the first (Tnx TLR for taking my forum virginity) so this site had to be something special. With Eraser posting my fanfic(thnx again btw) it was great to have something i had created on a website and i couldn't be more pleased that it was here.

With regards to the actual topic itself, maybe one of the vets or moderators could do a short story of TLR and have it on the home page for all newcomers to read and learn. Or just make it here on this thread.

The Reynen one where he thought he had to close down his stuff because of a prank call was also HUGE. Friggen nuts. I remember getting involved in it too a ton. Basically, he decided, and now still holds the opinion, that he started Freelancer modding and that everything henceforth was based off of Reynen mod, and that he should be credited and etc etc etc. That combined with taking down TNG, a beauty of a mod, caused enourmous trouble.

Ugh

the old TLR'S position thread, that brings back some memories for me of the good old days

Ah yes, the "Dark Ages" of TLR. Truly those were dark times (from all report). I'm glad that I wasn't a regular back then because it is likely that I would have been driven cowering, back into the shadows.

reading these reports and thread is nostalgic(in a bad way) because I've been through the dark ages of another major gaming site, and they weren't too different than TLR's. Glad that we were able to recover(to some degree).

Hehe - this was fun to read. Honostly, I'm in a sort of extended vacation atm, and only doing some stuff to keep the wheels turning. But I honostly do belive that FL2 is underway, and I expect to take up a more prominent role once more when I get to collect some more info on THAT game...

I started TLR for three reasons:
a.) I got the option from MS Denmark to run a competition on Starlancer, if I had a Starlancer website. I only ran a Age of Kings website back then. So I made a small website on Starlancer, and it sort of just started growing and growing from there. That I loved space-sims was just a bonus!

b.) I wanted a place to practise my coding skills, since I did have positions in my real life, where I did not get to code very much.

c.) I also wanted to see if I could build a self-sustaining friendly community, where people had a good time. I based it on my experience of running games-site, the first one called "Temple of Command & Conquer" back around 1994-1995. It was made with Perl and ran on a Unix server from my school.

The first member to the forums was a collegue of mine, but Hellcat came onboard shortly after. He was also the first staffmember.

There where tough times in the sites life, both due to situations in my life, and due to things happening on the site. Closest to closing was when I lost my job a year ago - this also meant I lost my hosting deal at the time - luckely another benefactor stepped up to help us all.

You are all a big part of my life - both current and former members, and I DO have plans for the site, but had to postpone the new forums due to both performance and security concerns, but hope to get that upgrade up with the next software release of the forum-code - with my custom adaptions.

Oh - and in my real life I'm working on a solution for people to easily make their own homepages. We expect to launch an US/International solution in a few months time!

Best Regards
