What is digital anvil doing now?

what new space-sim does digital anvil is working about right now?

Mustang edit: Let's give it a better title, 'h' isn't very descriptive.

Nobody knows exactly what Digital Anvil are doing right now. I've got $50 that says they're working on Freelancer 2 and that they're waiting until they get something worth showing the public before they announce it.

If you have seen the FL "making of" feature, there's a tour of Digital Anvil's office suite (no cubicles, they have real offices) and lots of people working there. They must be doing something unless Microsoft fired them all...

Knowing Microsoft, that is very much a possibility.

Didn't Chris Roberts leave DA? I thought he was the main guy behind this thing. I was pretty sure that when he left, we wouldn't be seeing a "Freelancer 2", just like when the Big Four left Blizzard we won't be seeing a "Diablo 3" either.

Heck I'd loved to be proven wrong and seeing a sequel out, but I'm kinda skeptical.

Chris Roberts was only involved in the conceptual stage and very early builds. The only thing that really bears his mark in FL is the CGI intro and some broad strokes of the game outline. His presence has absolutely zero influence on whether there will be a Freelancer 2 or not.

Its so frustrating that DA has no sight of its own anymore, so there is zero information on FL2 or anything else. Bungie was assimilated by MS, and they still have their own site, why doesn't DA?

Post Sat Apr 24, 2004 5:41 pm

Bungie has a site because Bungie wants a site and it is important for them to have a site. I doubt Microsoft said "NO WEBSITE FOR YOU!" - they probably just aren't high-profile enough to have a studio site, and rather just have websites for their games.

Does anyone know how much autonomy DIgital Anvil has now? Can they still pick their own projects or do they have to measure up to MS model of expectations?

Good question Spectre, my guess is they would still make their own pitches about what game they'd like to make. However, they would still have to meet with approval from Micrsoft to get any funding. If MS didn't like what they heard in the pitch? Well let's just say they'd have to have a fairly strong influence on what direction the game takes. MS would certainly retain full marketing control over DA products.

I wonder if they're allocated a certain amount of budgetary leeway? Some funds to start any project they want, but needing to prove the project at some point in order to get full funding ... or something like that?

Maybe a more pressing question... was Freelancer a money-maker for them? Imo the larger the company, the more important this is to them. If Freelancer was a financial disaster, I doubt it'd be easy to talk management into okay'ing a sequel.

Unfortunately, this is how most companies handle projects. Doesn't make sense to keep putting money into dead titles. Again, I'd like to be proven wrong though.

Now that is a question isn't it, and one I'm sure we'll never get an answer to.
