Am I missing the point?

Greetings,

Love the game. Finished the storyline. Something just doesn't seem right...

Throughout the game you're required to increase levels by either completing quests, or acquiring money. Sure, no problem. However to acquire money it seems that there are only two methods to this: hauling cargo or fighting battles. Fighting battles seems pretty straight forward (kill bad guys/installations etc), but it’s the hauling cargo that’s got me a little confused.

To make money quickly you haul more cargo, and to haul more cargo you get the biggest transport ship you can. The catch is that some of the cargo craft are unavailable until you reach level ‘x’, for example the Humpback which required level 20 (if I remember correctly).

It took me ages to get to level 13, and all of a sudden I was level 23 (or so) and during which was compelled to finish the ‘set quests’ (no more hauling cargo for a while) until I finished the game (at level 25 or so).

Okay, so now I’m level 2x, I have 760,000 credits, I’ve been sent back to Manhattan, and pretty sure the SP ‘game’ has ended. I’ve got a prompt on the screen that says “Get a Job” (like when we first start the game). I check my stats to find that my next level requirement is 69,000. Huh? I’ve got 760,000. Does this prompt mean I need 69,000 more? Is this a bug?

The other thing that’s bugging me is that it’s only now that I can afford to buy a ship like the Humpback, only now I’ve reached the level required before I can own a Humpback, and only now that I’ve been released from duty in order to track one down and buy it. But the game is over! Isn’t it? What's the point of being 'locked-out' of these craft/areas etc until the game is over?

Are there more missions after you’ve wasted the Nomads in the Dyson (spelling) sphere, and have watch the final cut scene in the bar? What’s the point from now on? Frankly I couldn’t be bothered with the ‘fighting’ missions (for a few thousand lousy credits), when I can make a fortune hauling Pharmaceuticals, but what’s the point of that if level-increasing is my only goal? Is there something else? Is the ‘something else’ contained in MP-mode?

I need more Freelancer, and I need it now!!

Cheers

@ PACMAN , Welcome to TLR. You are now freelancing. After the story, you freelance and go where you want and do what you want. The galaxy is now yours to search. The options is a mod or MP. Either way, enjoy.

After the story, treat Freelancer as a blank canvas to go and do what you and your imagination want.
For example, I've joined the Bundshuh pirates operating out of the Rhineland system. I've bought a Stilleto from the Bundshuh and I'm disrupting the trade lanes waiting for Dauman transports to drop out of sub-light speed, then I attack them, kill all, steal the cargo and take it back to the Bundshuh for a nice profit.

Let your imagination guide you. Think of something along those lines above, then go and see if you can do it in Freelancer. As you see there are many ways to continue the game...with a little imagination of course

There's much to discover. The map you have after finishing the storyline is about 1/4 complete at best. There are also many far superior ships to be had in many of the "outlying" areas. It's an open ended game, use your imagination and read through some other forums here. Try some of the mods, find out what happens when you blow up transport ships. The storyline is just a teaser, the real game starts now. If that doesn't work for you, I feel bad for you.

Cool.

Thanks for the tips. I'd already started raiding storage facilities before I read your advice.

It's time for New Traditions.

Well, i was disapointed. After you have the best ship, the best guns, the best sheilds, have tried doing pirating and stuff, there is nothing left to do! I want to be able to buy a world, start a business, hire escorts, and direct transports, like the ones that can carry 40,000. I wanted to actually go and kill the pirate bases and permanatly clear up a system. The game had so much potential

Yeah i wish i could do that too. But I'm thinkning of sending microsoft an e-mail with some ideas i've found while searching the forums. Haven't tried blowing up a storage facility though I mainly stick to Malta(thats where good money is made).

True.

I get the feeling from playing the game that the 'Juni-and-Co.' storyline was almost an afterthought, as if the developers had to finish the game in a hurry, or were instructed to take another course.

Outside of that virtually-linear plot is a vast, intricate “universe of possibilities”, as they say. But what happened to it? Were they planning on making expansions? Did games like EAB and EVE quash their enthusiasm?

Allegedly, MicroSoft got tired of waiting for Digital Anvil to finish the game and told them to wrap it up. True or not, it explains some of the loose ends. Maybe more story line was prepared, but had to get dropped to market the game when it was.

I love the freedom to go off and do whatever I want. But the way the story line ends does sort of leave everyone thinking there is more to come.

I used to also play the game like that.
However I have much more fun and challenge trying to do something as I described in my previous post to this thread.
Instead of thinking big, i.e. a race for the best ship, weapons, etc... Think small.
Battling the House Corps & the Rhineland authorities Valk's n Banshees in a Stilleto with lev-7 shielding with Lev-7/6 Weapons is much more of a challenge than just lazilly flying around killing things in a Titan/Eagle/Sabre with lev-10 equipment.
I love creating a 'plan of action' in my head of what I want to do in Freelancer, then I go and play the game and make it happen. At the moment I'm not venturing out of the Rhineland sector of space. As far as I'm concerned the other systems don't exist for me (while I fly for the Bunschuh). However the next time I play, I may decide to work for the Bounty Hunters in the Border worlds. There is so much to do when you play 'small'

Don't let the Trees obscure your view of the Woods...
Did that last bit make any sense? If it did then you know exactly what I mean

I have the most fun with the OpenSP Mod and the Freelancer Character Editor(IONCROSS). That way I can begin a new game in a faction. I am currently in a Falcon, a Xeno, and preying on Rhienland shipping in Hudson. Hanging out at Atka and waiting for those Republican Trains to come through.

I recently reloaded Freelancer and finished the storyline. I thought t had some rough edges, but it was fun. The most amazing thing, and dissappointing, is that I never again get to interract with the characters that were built up. I won't get spoily, but there are some relationships ( proffesional, philosophical, and romantic ) that just somehow vanish.

I like the single player/open universe mods a great deal. But now, that I have finished the storyline, it seems really odd that Trent's mentor back home, his war buddies, his new "boss," and his paramour cease to exist. Oh, I'll get over it =) I like pirating and/or bounty hunting. I'm just perturbed about the wasted potential.

One thing yoiu could do is explore the UNKNOWN systems, only accesable from Omicron Alpha and Gamma. One is empty exept for nomads and a pretty background. The other has two planets and nomads. The planets are strange. One has monkeys for inhabitants, and the other has robots. They all say they work for the order, but nothing is EVER happening, no jobs, no rumors, NOTHING. Also, there is nothing to buy at the dealers. You can only buy stuff you sell to them when you land.
