Mouse/trackball mapping options

Big Howdy from Houston...everyone. Fairly new to TLR (and very impressed) Many thanks to all the modders...I really appreciate your hardwork and passion for Freelancer.

I was just wondering what others are using in the way of mapping setups for the various multi-button mice and trackballs that are available. I'm using the M$ IntelliPoint Optical trackball with 2 additional buttons. Seems like a waste not to atleast try some different configs on it.

Thanks heaps for any replies.

GaryT, open your options menu and then open controls and you can use the other buttons to , fire missiles, countermessures, torps, ect. Lot of options available. Welcome to TLR

@GaryT: Trackball, is that the one where you turn the ball with your thumb? If so does it work well. I've been thinking about getting a wireless optical mouse but if those things are better I might spring for one of them. And (even though we're in the gaming forum) I'm not just talking about gaming. Has it got a natural feel using it with other applications?

I'm on my second thumb operated trackball mouse(currently a Microsoft Optical
Trackball) and its so much easier to use and so much better for dogfighting
maneuverability in Freelancer that I would personally never go back to a joystick.
It's much smoother just spinning the trackball, and quicker to change direction.
Also , I've had carpal tunnel - I tried various ergonomic mice to no avail until
I tried a thumb trackball. I think the difference is that you don't need to grip
the mouse. Also, the trackball doesn't need a large mousepad because the ball
is on the top.

Yeh, I've never worked out those things that you work with your thumb. I imagine they would be awkward, but i've never tried

There's actually two types one with the thumb controlled trackball and the other is more offset to the right for control with you other fingers. Both are really great. Heck...with optical, you don't have those darned rollers to clean.

Makes control (especially in Freelancer) VERY reponsive, very light and crisp. I'd say the precision stands up to the best joysticks. I certainly reccomend it over a regular mouse and pad. The wheel is nice for thrust control.

The trackball is also nice when ya don't have a lot of room on your keyboard tray.

Thanks Wolf....they take some getting used to whichever way ya go. I've been using it so long though that it feels pretty natural.

Thanks for the welcome!!

I've heared that a lot, that a trackball works wonders once you get the hang of it. I tried it but never got passed the initial frustrations

I'm staying with my Wireless mouse.

trackball... i tried one of those. it just seemed so awkward. id get one of those nice new optical mice with 5 buttons. the extra buttons for me would be :

torp/missile/mine

or: weapongroup1/weapgroup2/weapgroup3

Trent: Sure, as long as I'm not shot at, knocked out, held at gunpoint, electrocuted, skewered alive by giant alien shapeshifters, have to dive out windows, or fight off spindly nomad incubi.
