Its not forward we should look, but back

many people want freelancer 2, its obvious.

but let me explain myself. (this may be known to 'lancer vets but to those who picked up freelancer without playing starlancer ect) i originally baught the game with a friend whos about 45, he said it reminded him about a game he used to play when he was young called elite. he described the free nature of the game and what the game was about and it surprised us both that freelancer was almost exactly the same (except updated) of course i finished it a few times and went looking for the next one, and got frustrated like everyone else when i found out it didnt exsist . however at one point i tried downloading elite, i didnt find it but i downloaded somthing like elite 2 or somthing

anyway to the point, you could guess what two sides were in the game, the alliance and the co-allition. once it sprung to my head that these were the same sides fighting in the intro movie to FL i promptly downloaded another elite series game. the same results. i dont know if everyone out there already knows this but freelancer seems to be the most recent of a string of games that date back to the original elite from years and years ago. im not sure if starlancer is a prequel to the game having never played it.

am i right? if so it would certainly make FL2 a bigger possibility

I remember playing Elite and Elite 2 - with the good old blue danube in the backgorund. That was my fav game wayyyy back when. Since then i have never played a game for as long, or as dedicatedly until FL .

However, i was under the impression that the X-series of games were coming from Elite - whereas FL came more from a wingcommander /privateer series (played neither!!). Not sure if that is correct, but i was under the impression that the latest in teh "elite" series almost (not quite - but originating from the same game was) X2 the threat..........but i might be (probabily am) wrong

Chips it's correct to an extent. Freelancer comes more from WC than from Elite but has bits of Elite thrown in. The opposite is true to X.

I've got a PC version of Elite on my computer right now. In fact, I'd been playing it until I ran across a copy of FL last year. You're right ... FL is the only game I've ever played as long as Elite. I love the freedom to go and do whatever you want, which is what made the old Elite so fantastic. Elite set the standard that virtually all space sims are still compared to, even though it came out 20 years ago!

With linear games, you play them through a few times -- and that's it. With FL, it is always different. Even if you don't use mods, you can still try the game in different ships. Right now I've bought a Stiletto for the first time and am having fun with it. Wonder why nobody seems to rate it so highly. I can blast Titans to bits with ease!

lol - i am trying to regress. i have a pc - i just need to go home and dig out my old 3.5 floppies and install dos, then i can install old games again and enjoy

Incase anyone posts that modern comps are too fast - thats okay - i have a 386sx25 with an 49meg hard drive, using dblspace to make it to 80meg. lol - for some i used to have to disable the mouse from the autoexec.bat file during startup, so that we would have enough base memory to run stuff (I never worked with windows until i got to uni )

Why not just use say Dosbox, MoSlow etc and some DOS Drivers?

Yeah, it is. It's a linear campaign following the start of another war between... guess which two sides? The Western Alliance and the Eastern Coalition! The folks in Freelancer are descendants of the Alliance folks who made a run for it in the sleeper ships you hear about so frequently.

Isn't the guy who made Elite (David Breben) still in process of making Elite 4. Or has he given that up? Here is a small little FAQ he posted about the game. Unfortunately, I remember reading this same thing almost 2 years ago. So it hasn't changed nor been updated.

The main site is located here.

You can actually download the old games for free so check out the product links to the Elite games and you'll eventually come across the ability to download it.

Supposedly, an updated Elite type game has been in the works for several years. Don't know if we'll ever see it though. There was also supposed to be a Russian Elite type in the works.

A few years ago I downloaded a nice PC adaption called Elite the New Kind. But one of the Elite creators told the site to take it down -- or else. It is a perfect adaption of the original Elite, but with far better graphics. Same goofy Blue Danube waltz though.

Post an e-mail if you want it, and maybe I can attach it as a file. It's about 490 kb.
