Question about graphics

I originally posted this in the Tecnical Issues Forum, but I didn't get any response, I figured I'd try here.
I used to have an older comp woth an OK graphics card, but the graphics in Freelancer were great. Then I got a new comp with an ATI 9800 XTcard, and Freelancer does not recognize my card, giving me only "Primary Display" as an option. Now the in-game graphics are not too great (the rendering distance for the ships and stations is VERY short, and almost all objects are pretty blocky), but all of the Detail slider bars in Video options are set as high as they can go.

Does anyone know if htere are some drivers to fix this, or maybe something I can tell my comp to do to let me use my 9800? thanks

Drivers, they solve 90% of the problems, make sure you have the latest.

I had the same problem with the 9000Pro...I updated the drivers and everythings been cool since. I recommend you do the same.

Check here to see if your drivers are up to date

I downloaded the display driver from the link above (thanks for that, btw), but now i don't know how to tell FL to use my graphics card instead of the primary display (the graphics aren't different). Is there a set up manu where i can do that? thank you

Sometimes with the ATI based cards, even with an updated driver the program will not recognize it. Check your card settings in the display properties section. I know with NVIDIA cards there is an option to have the program set the settings. If that is not checked, then the program is locked into using the settings that are set in that dialogue box. The other option is to check your version of directX. You need to be using ver. 9.0b. I had to upgrade to this in order tto solve some graphics problems. I hope this helps. Good Luck

You want to disable your primary display driver perhaps? Go to control panel and deactivate the card.

Concerning graphics:

How much difference is there in looks between a DX7and e.g. a DX9 Card in Freelancer? I'm running on an old Radeon 64. Does anyone have comparable screenshots?

I'm running a Geforce 3, which is DX8 compatible, and my visuals look just the same as any s****y screenshot I've seen..........dunno about any degredation when you're only DX7 compat..........
