Eye Strain

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

Any other game, and I too can play for hours on end. MW4, GTA, TotalWar titles, you name it. Freelancer is the exception to the rule. It hurts me enough that I instinctively hide the CD case from sight. What a bummer. This has to be one of my favorite games, and I'm forced to avoid it.

There's a Freelancer Addiction thread already. Don't hijack this one.
Try the following-1. Wearing Sunglasses.
2. Turning off some of the in-game effects.
3. Buying a better graphics card/monitor.
4. Playing Freelancer on another computer.
5. Seeing a doctor (you never know...).

At the moment, I play FL off and on- usually when I think of something new and seemingly suicidal to do. With the size of my game library, If I dedicated my life to any one game as my primary title, I'd never get around to playing most of them...2 games for about 3-4 hours each is my average on any one day, up to 5-6 hours each on weekends. The longest gaming binge I've ever gone on for a single game was a 36-hour Starsiege play-a-thon, with FL taking second in a 12 hour tour of Sirius. I've managed to do 48 hours playing more than one game, and my goal is to blow a whole week some time over next summer.

I occasionally get headaches from certain games, but usually a (big) cold drink and turning down the brightness allows me to keep on playing. I recommend iced coffee or coca cola, and about a 1/4 monitor brightness setting.

Whoops, forgot to add...splashing some water in your eyes can do wonders fo eye strain. Sometimes it's just that they're getting a bit dry and need a little moisture. Squeezing your eyes shut and rolling them a few times seems to relieve tension as well.

Beer works too. Drink enough and you you won't even feel your headache. On the other hand, you might need a seat belt to stay on the chair.

Increase the refresh rate of your monitor. I'm playing with 120 Hz and OK

GUYS ... if he's complaining about eye strain because of the cruise weapons, then the answer seems pretty damned simple to me.

Cockpit view. Duh.

At first it's a little weird trying to fight like that, but it doesn't take long to get used to it, then it's easy.

try reducing the brightness/contrast on your monitor!

See, the problem with reducing brightness or contrast is that it would take a MAJOR adjustment to get rid of that problem, and then it would screw up everything else inside and outside of Freelancer. I spent forever getting my monitor to look right, and so I just got used to the cockpit view.

I like to use the cockpit view, but it depends on the ship. The cockpit view in some ships is great. But in others you feel like you are in a wobbly bird cage.

Two other important things to reduce eye strain in any game

#1) Make sure there are other lights on in the room, not just your monitor. If the only source of light is your monitor and the intensity of light is frequently changing, your pupils must quickly constrict/dilate in response to what is on screen. Overtime, these rapids fluctuations begin to cause eye pain/strain.

#2) Make sure you're not sitting too close to your monitor. When looking at something up close your pupils constrict and your eyes begin to cross. This is called accomodation. (You can try this at home with your friends!) If you continue to look at something close-up for an extenced period of time, you will likely begin to have eye pain or develop a headache.

Another consideration is that you have migraines or some other headache syndrome, not actually eye strain.

Also, people who have "eye strain" actually just need glasses, contacts, corrective lenses, etc. to correct a refractive error.

In the end, you shouldn't have to let something as silly as eye strain keep you from enjoying freelancer for hours...and hours...and hours...

I have a colleague at work who actually had to get special perscription "computer glasses". He needs glasses to read, though his distance vision is fine. But the computer is in sort of a twilight zone between his good distance vision and reading glasses range. Before he got the "computer" specs, he was always getting headaches.

Computer specs are a great idea... AOL sells some in various stores... they're kind of an orange-ish color, the idea is to better see the colors in your monitor. HOWEVER, that may be contrary to what you need.

The big one - sit further back from your monitor. That always helped my buddy that had strained eyes from work.

Usually, I'll just take breaks when my eyes get tired of looking at screens. Otherwise, I will shut down 1 of the games I am playing and start just playing 1 instead of 2 . If given the option, I will usually play games all day long if the game is really good. If things start being bad, I will take break by going to another game. In other words, don't use my example if you don't like playing for long times.

I recommend some aspirin to make the pain go away.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
