Making Freelancer 2

Hello, I was reading the forums and I stumbled across someone who (maybe kidding) suggested that the fans make FL2. You know what? We have some insanely smart people here at TLR and I personally belive it. Is anyone with me? Or shall I just go make my own profit?

How to start. Okay, first:

1. Microsoft / DA will sue you to heaven and back if you try marketing a new game under the original name, which they created. Microsoft is infamous for creating lawsuits which bankrupt, ask some ex-software people for their opinion, it'll be the same answer.

2. You would have to have an engine to base the game on. Engines are the most buggering thing to try and code, as you need beta testers to test, dedicated programmers to program etc.

3. Even though there are lots of people here at TLR, a vast majority just signed up for the off-topic forums, and don't even know what Freelancer is. Also, only the people in the General Editing Forums would be able to code the game.

4. Communication is vital when making a game. E-mail ain't going to cut it when you need to produce mass-numbers of a game. Which moves me onto 5 ...

5. What insane company would want to market a game when a big lawsuit from Microsoft is hanging over their heads !? None that I know of, myself.

It's a nice Idea, but as you can see from my points above, it ain't going to happen

If you talking about money profit, neo_kuja is right. You wont see money from it directly (maybe donations).
Other then that, Its hard to modify closed game. Its not Half-Life or Quack with open source. So you can decode binis, you can hack dll resources, you may create new models but the main core of the game is not so easy to touch. Of course you can debug yourself to death figuring out what each class/function do but seriously FL2 will be out while you maping the dlls.

but i might be wrong.

Right. Although I have heard of a few people here at TLR who COULD do it, none of them would be willing to. Mostly because MS would sue you to hell and back. Another is because it takes years to make a game, and these people only make mods in their spare time. If they were to make a game, you would need to:

1. Already have a company to work with, such as EA, DA, Micro$hit, ect.

2. Lots o money to pay your workers.

3. A good game engine.

4. A lot of free time on your hands

So this sums up to the fact that fans making a game is impossible.

Ohhh! Beu-tiful! Preeety! How do I blow it up?

don't go too hard on the guy. its true, MS will sue you/creator back into the stone age. but instead of calling it Fl2, should we decide to make it we could just start working on an enourmous mod of sorts. call the mod Fl2 or something. the voice overs could be done personally, we could take out juni, say she flew her defender into a neutron star or somehting.

Remember the Star Wars games? After a while, you could choose to fly for the evil Empire ... gaining in rank with the Emperor ect. So maybe a game where you work for the Nomads?

But seriously anything remotely like FL is likely to bring the legal beagles down on you. Nothing stopping you from stealing the idea. Look how much of FL is pilfered from the old Elite. And that Hovis race course is right out of a Star Wars game. Change Trent's name, call him a mercenary, send him into a new galaxy through something like the Nomad jump system ... or even have an experiment go haywire as in X-Beyond the Frontier. Lots of great possibilities for a top level programmer.

The question is not how its going to be called but if money could be rised from it. Defenition is not importent. If its free then its a "modification" and we already have nice mods.

I'd say this topic is usless, if you want to contribute and extand current game go join one of the mod teams.

Ok you know what it's true that MS will sue you to hell and back but what if the game has totaly different title, basic rules of the original, and my idea is to make the story like two centruies later, ofcourse you will need alot of spare time and a good engine totaly newer ships but it can all be taken care of all you practicaly need is some good computer nerds that have alot of experience and that would be realy dedycated to FL and would love a newer version.

p.s I don't cualify and if you decide to do it make the story alot longer because this one i pass in 8H 43M 63S my curent record.

Um...I was actually joking...despite what I said...

About the legal issues...like Orillion said; we could just make it a big big big big massivly huge mod to Freelancer...

If I managed to actually get a team together would anyone care to help?

I can't program, but I can do voice overs, and voice acting.
I'd be willing to contribute in that aspect.
If all goes well, I'd love to audition for any parts.
