Widescreen resolution?

Widescreen resolution?

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone with a widescreen monitor has been able to get Freelancer to work properly on it?

I have a laptop with a native resolution of 1440x900. I noticed that the options ingame don't let me select a widescreen resolution, but I was able to work around this by editing the perfoptions.ini file. This allows FL to fill up the whole screen, but then I have a problem where the HUD and the bar along the top of the screen are kind of clipped and shifted off the screen.

Normally I would admit defeat and just run in 1024x768, but since this is lower than the native resolution the graphics and text are kind of blurred and generally ugly.

I would appreciate any suggestions from someone who was in a similar predicament...

Widescreen laptops? Man have I been left behind by computer technology. I always thought the height had to be 75% of the width.

Yes, I do believe this is probably the first laptop to come with a widescreen display. It's of the Toshiba Satellite series.

So am I to assume not a single person here has even tried to run FL in a wide resolution? That's surprising to me because this game is particularly beautiful when it is viewed in a panoramic fashion. Oh well :-(.

one question.. Why a laptop?

this is my world; it goes round and round and round

Well as you can see by inspecting my profile I have been a member for quite some time. In that time I have already played and beaten FL, but that was on a completely different computer--a desktop with a regular aspect-ratio monitor. Now I am in a situation where I need to be more mobile, and I also want to give FL another run. But as I explained, I may not be able to do that :-(.

The p25 I presume?

Nice laptop! I wonder if some sort of emulator is possible. Interesting question. By looking at all the other forums out there, FL has not been one of the game to be converted to widescreen...yet. A lot of linux users out there tweaking the screensizes I see.

Yep, that's the one...I didn't pay that much for it though :p. I'll guess I'll just keep my eyes open and see what develops for widescreen support...

My Dell D800 has a similar graphics card (4200 rather than 5200) running at 1680 x 1050. The graphics card has an option to use dispaly adapter scaling and Freelancer runs just fine on it. I'm surprised that a more recent card doesn't have this feature.

Delos, are you saying you run Freelancer in 1680x1050 or just the desktop?

My card does have a "display adapter scaling option", but I use the "fixed aspect ratio scaling" option instead which places black bars at the sides of the monitor when the resolution displayed isn't of the wide 8:5 ratio. Might I also inquire what driver version you are using? Thanks.

Yeh, graphics card BIOS rather than widescreen mode, and whoever said before about the toshiba satilite series, its only on the pro models with proper geforce cards in - just incase anyone happens to care!

Com_Trooper,

I run the desktop at 1680 by 1050. Freelancer I run at 1024 by 768 - I haven't modified any of the ini settings. Using the display adapter scaling I don't see any distortion in the HUD.

The drivers I use are the latest ones from the Dell site:

video BIOS v.4.28.20.31.C1, A05
video driver v.6.14.10.4487, A05
