E3 preview

hmm... I pulled down the E3 preview of Freelancer yesterday (it's right at the bottom of the pile in the downloads section) and I must say, the concept seems to be massively different to the ventual result. I would even go so far as to suuggest that there are aspects that seem to be better. what does everyone else think?

I agree - although what we have now is not too shabby. Here's the story: Freelancer has been brewing for over 5 years in the production line, and DA's financial difficulties threatened to bury both the company and FL together. MS comes in and buys DA and restores financial remedy to FL. But MS also felt that FL has taken too long to finish and set a deadline - to meet this deadline, several features that are not fully ironed out and debugged are scrapped altogether.

Using Ironcross Server Operator, I got to take a peek at a couple unfinished, unconnected systems. It would have been amazing if they took this a step further and built more alien jumpgates to lead to even crazier surreal areas.

Someone before put it best.. we have a working skeleton.

Its one hell of an awesome game, it could have been one of the most engrossing space trading classics of all time.. as it should have been.. but they left so much out

Back in 1999, I think, I remember really hoping for Freelancer to come out soon and I was totally enthralled by all it claimed it would have. Those years really deminished my enthusiasm. How many times did Freelancer win game of the year at the expo? At least twice.

i think what we've got so far is really great. I'm not much of a gamer but I've become so enthralled by it that to me there's no better game out there.
(that doesn't mean thee are no equals, just none that are better).
I also believe that this is just a "working skeleton" and could use a little more meat on it's bones.
I'm absolutely nuts to find out what's on the other side of that strange gate in the dyson sphere. Who were the aliens that left all those artifacts, and the nomads behind?? How far reaching is their advanced jump gate system?
Why can't we use the jump gates they left behind, after all, trent activated them again as the last cutscene of the game. there's so much stuff that I feel is left out. The game has great potential,...it's destined to become an unfinished classic and certainly has more than just a cult following.
I wish someone would 'finish' the developement.
Yet another reason to dislike MS. *sigh* reason number eight-hundred and sixty two.

Must you whine all the time? I believe it's because DA has some sort of plot design for these things you mention, or at least keeping the story arc as broad as possible. If anything, it's a sign of good omen *cough FL2/exp pack cough*.

MS can never win, can't it? they released the game, and it's imperfect, and we whine. Had they chose to postpone the release to iron out the bugs, we would say "wtf is taking them so long, it's been six years fer gods sake M$ sucks". More whining.

Had they not bought Digital Anvil, FL and DA would have run out of money and gone belly up, and there would be no FL at all, not a perfect one, not a so-so one, NONE. Granted FL is not perfect, but we have it on our hands and installed on our PCs, THANKS TO MS, whether you like it or not.

I suggest we count our blessings, gentlemen. It's amazing how people whine all the time about everything and conveniently punches the broadest target around, without ever understanding the context and the alternate scenarios of events.

The games itself has a very good redeeming quality, it is capable of being modded. Some of the folks on this web site have done a GREAT job with mods that we then can use to play beyond the core game. That alone says a lot. MS, who likes to keep things secret, gave US, the players the opertunity to continue it ourselves. Think about it. Do something about it, create you own mod, step up to the challenge. Who knows, you may have the next great mod?

@finalday, I wish however, more things could be modded, say for instance random missions. The potential there alone would have been enough to propel the game into early classic status.
