What is a "K" in freelancer equal to?

is there any relation between a K in freelancer and any measurement we use today? im thinking a thousand kilometers, but thats not very much in space...
donno why i wonder about these things...

im one of those people who gets migraines wondering why Starwars Episodes 1 and 2 have better technology than 4, 5, and 6... and why george lucas didnt fix that problem...

I'm not aware of any direct relationship between the K and any measurement that we have today......though you could theorise that maybe they are leaving zero's off of the numbers......like 20k might equal 20000 kilometers.....which is a long way no matter how you cut it......

as far as better technology in the 1 and 2....I think you are mistaken very much about that.....especially when you compare the walkers they had for the clone army compared to the massive AT ATs in Empire. And there certainly weren't any super star-destroyers around, also the holographic imaging communication stuff seemed exactly the same to me, So what exactly was better in your opinion.......

Freelancer isn't to scale.

think about it. If Trent is two meters tall (for the saKe of ease of calculation) and his starflier (at the start of the storyline) is six times his height, then it is 12 meters tall.

compare the starflier to a trade lane ring, and then a trade lane ring versus a planet, I worked it out as planet Manhattan being about three kilometers in diameter, which is ridiculously small.

put simply, the planets aren't big enough, the distances aren't far enough, the stars sure as hell are too small, and everything else is far too big. even a battleship or station should just vanish next to the planets. (Earth is, what? 200,000 Km across? Freelancer includes a few gas giants, too, and Jupiter, as a convenient example, is so huge that you could sink Earth into the great red spot without coming near the edges.)

of course, if you were going for accurate scale, the game would be gargantuan, and pretty much unplayable.

My advice is not to worry about it. when everything's out of proportion to make it easy to understand and play, the last thing you need to worry about is how its measured.

There is a REAL measurement called clicks for space distances.

Actually, for realistic distances, Kilometers, Astronomical Units, Light Years (and Hours) and Parsects are used for space distances.

Moby: 1 click = 1 kilometer, it's a slang military term for 1000-meters (1 Kilometer)

woah im not here to start an argument about starwars, but the technology IS better (the little hologram things are so cool... and do u see nething as advanced as super battle driods in 4,5 and 6? OK! no more replies on this subject.

Post Tue Jan 13, 2004 9:24 pm

Battledroids were obviously rendered obsolete as soon as the clone army was brought into service, rember the three largest droid armies in the galaxy got smashed to peices by the clone army, So it would stand to reason that these so called "super battledroids" weren't all that super if a bunch of clones could bomb on them....

not to change the subject, but the technology does improve with the series. compare Anakin's bionic arm, and Luke's bionic hand. The hand doesn't actually look like a bionic. The stormtrooper blast rifles are smaller than the clone trooper guns, the Death Star was only a blueprint during Episode 2, and the Republic would consider a Victory class star destroyer to be seriously advanced and powerful.

here's a thought: how would a Freelancer battleship, such as a Dreadnought, stand up against a Star Destroyer, do you reckon? I reckon the Star Destroyer would kick the dreadnought about like a football.

...................................................
.....................This thread has suddenly given me a headache......
PLEASE lets not talk about Starwars here....
Especially not the fact that there's 20 years difference in technology, ideas and special effects between them....................
Especially not the fact that Lucas though he had to out-do the previous movies with this pretentious pile of clap-trap masquerading as sequels........
FREELANCER ONLY PLEASE YOU MAD EWOKS!!!!!

oh yeah but a Super Star destroyer could wipe out all of Sirius on its own...

I remember owning Tie Fighters in my X-Wing in X-wing vs. Tie Fighter... I'd hate to see Ties go up against Eagles and Titans

Anyway, I doubt the K is there for any reason other than for us to more easily calculate distance. It doesn't actually mean anything. Though it always reverts to "m" when you get within 2K, so it could be metres.
2000m = 2K
No matter how you figure it though, things in this game are really off scale. It strikes me as odd everytime I look at Trent through the window and then look at a planet, but it makes the game easier to play, so no complaints here.

Post Tue Jan 20, 2004 8:29 pm

something else too, at the beginning of the story mode or in trent's personal Log of his missions, Trent says, Wow! Manhattan has almost 2 million people on it!
So they made the planets ridculously small so it would be much easier to play; but they made up for it by the planets populations ridiculously small too.

We don't own this place, but we have an understanding with the people who do.....

Post Wed Jan 21, 2004 3:53 am

it beats me how a population of two HUNDRED million can occupy a city that covers the whole face of Manhattan. perhaps Manhattanites like a lot of elbow room?

Post Wed Jan 21, 2004 11:19 am

the "city" is just a load of props
all the people live in one square "k" while the rest is cardboard cutouts

The planets' true sizes can be seen in their respective info tabs. The distances are scaled down so that you can get from place to place in less than a week.
