you can't, until the storyline is through. OR you could download chip's open sp mod. that way, you can do whatever you want right from the get go.
to become a pirate, just tear up a couple of transport convoys or shoot up the cops. do it enough, and the pirate factions start becoming friendly.

Well, you can actually. But it would take you a fair amount of time and when you take on the next mission, all the faction reps are changed back to what they should be storywise.
That's a waste of time and you should wait until you finished the SP campain.
Or you can go online and become a pirate. You'd still have to work for it though.

if u wanna be a pirate, u might want to start by working for the Junkers...a lot of interesting things can come from this....

I don't consider this a spoiler cos if u haven't found the Junker base in Manhattan within, say 20 minutes of play u should start the game again
