Docking Computers

Anyone remember playing Elite?

If you do, you'll remember the most heinous of all features, the one which made veterans sweat and the greens cower in fear. Was it the numerous pirates? Was it the off chance of getting sucked to another dimension and having to fight aliens, with no missiles and only mining lasers? No... it was the dreaded MANUAL DOCKING!!! Nothing else in the world makes someone weep like seeing a pod overflowing with luxury goods getting blown away because of one tiny slip, one little delay following a painfully slow explosion with cargo flying around just to rub it in. It was because of this, that players saved for nothing other than a docking computer and the criminally extortionate rent-a-dock was a godsend.

My point?

Thank <insert prefered deity> for shields and a free docking computer in Freelancer.

Eeek! I'm acting like I actually know what I'm talking about.

I've only played it once or twice at a friend's house, crimson skies, you had the option to auto dock or manualy dock, a feature I think every game should have.

If life is unfair, how come I haven't won yet?

Dont dock manually in FL, the doors wont open or the planets will blow your sorry ass goodbye.

Don't bug me or I'll ride my Sabre and shove it up your fr**n' *ss

This subject might be very nostalgic, but I knew many people who gave up on Elite, because docking was so hard............

Sure i hated docking.

But i saw it as if i couldnt dock, then i wouldnt last 5 minutes in a firefight.

Chips: Look on Ebay. Seen plenty of old 386s for sale.

Just my $0.02, but it could just be the cardamine talking.

<< i think the docking computer should play the blue danube as docking >>

Thank God, you had the option of turning off that stupid docking scene.

What was evil about the game was that you could get your docking computer destroyed in combat! By then you'd probably got pretty rusty at manual dockings with that spinning Corollis space station. Nothing was more infuriating than fighting your way through hordes of pirates, surviving a run in with Thargoid invasion ships and having your hold filled with salvaged cargo and Tharglets -- only to arrive at the space station with your docking computer gone and get blown to bits when you made a bodge of the docking.

p.s. You can find Elite PC adaptions on line. I got the one with the nice upgraded graphics from the Elite site ... before one of the creators demanded the site take down the link! (You can guess which one it was.) And yes, the PC version has got the stupid music on it.

Something else for you other old codgers ... is it really 40 years???

I've been playing a PC adaptation of Elite, after my Archemedes died. It took me several days to work out that Escape was key for Escape Pod, not the menu.

What's the biggest amount of cargo anyone's lost?

'Slave'? What's a slave?

I haven't been playing in a while, can't find an XP compatable version, so I can't remember all of the game.

HEE! Let's talk about Freelancer. There's an off topic forum for this kind of stuff.

About docking...DAMN

There's one part in the Single Player I truely hate: It's when you have to dock with the Order Battleship (pretty sure I'm not spoiling) and you get blown to bits by all sorts of other ships. I won't go into detail, because I don't think this is the spoiler section, but DAMN!

My point is that there should be a faster way to dock (especially in the heat of battle). My freighter once took 30 seconds to land in a dock a few meters away!
I kept turning around in circles untill it finally managed to dock!
My docking computer must have been affected by the radiation!

Yea, I'v come to use free flight untill the last second and press f3, one good fact about docking, once it goes to the cut scence you are invincible, this has saved me more than once. other times I press f3 from to far away and wait what seems like hours before It goes to the cut scence, esecilay when docking with jump gates,

If life is unfair, how come I haven't won yet?

I've never once been blown to bits docking, but it's been a close call a few times -- the one you mention being the closest!

why does everyone compare FL and SL with Elite? There's no comparison. without modding FL is nowhere near as good as Elite.
