What is a balanced game, precisely?

This is actually a two-part question:

1. How can we measure it?
2. What can be done to Freelancer to achieve it (if it's not balanced already)?

Please post your opinions / suggestions here.
I often hear comments about mods of being not properly balanced. Too uber or too easy, mostly. How hard should a game be?

*puts FL CD on his finger* I think it's balanced....

Anyway, I think it can only be balanced for individuals. Some like it hard, and others easy.

I believe if you're going to measure balance you have to take the original as zero level. I feel it's balanced in it's pure form, mods are what makes it easy or hard. There are enough spoiler questions to assume for your average gamer like myself that the game is hard enough to be challenging and easy enough to be completable all in one contrary fell swoop.

Maybe McCabe's Cyclomatic Complexity ?

Well, it would be nice if all the nations had equivalant ships. ie. As it stands, Rheinland ships are better (slightly) than Kusarin, which are better than Bretonian, and in turn, Liberty. Maybe if all the nations had low-level ships, mid-level, and high-level ships. Not so much balance as, I like Kusarin ships, but they suck more than Rheinland ships. Get the gist?

Higher level doesn't mean better. The Kusari ships are more agile than the Rhineland ones.

Define Ballanced. Parts of the univererse are ballanced for some situations and not others. It's why there are over 40 systems. Freelancer has too many choices in it to be ballanced for everything. --- RR16

I think it could be balanced if the different fighter classes had different speeds, and even different fighters with in classes had different speeds, for instance a dagger being faster than the defualy SP/MP ship (forgot the name lol). also i think that there should be a dynamic economy in MP. it would get rid of all those get rich quick schemes people use

AH HA! I shall be different and have no signature...

i hope... i was banned before to get a sabre within 1.75 hours without taking money from others... isbn't it odd...

it would be nicer to see more ships... more ships well more div classes means more ships, more ships mean, more choice to fly in... more choice to fly in other fighters mean more hours to get the so called best ship ... don't read that that is the best ship... that is individual.... so don't start with that right now... it's about balanced and not about the best...

If u c some1 in a dagger make fireballs from hunters it can be me

This is a good way to think about balance in a general sense.

Balanced is what everyone else is and you are not.

A partially balanced game is get rid of the nomad guns availible to players.

Post Mon Nov 10, 2003 1:54 pm

Another thing would be to prohibit players from hoarding the codename guns--a player should not be allowed to keep more of them than he can mount (six). If a player has more of them, then he should be obliged to sell the extras to other players.

I agree on the Nomad guns- get them out of MP.

Balanced is whether it is too easy or hard really. Its hard to completely balance FL because you can always get better stuff and get better skills, while the game won't adapt to you increase in proforance. FL is balanced, if you keep on moving to harder systems.
