Suggestion for Prequel Storyline:

Trents Dad, a GMG merc, killed in action during end of the 80 Years War. Mom, a freigher pilot, killed by a renegade faction of Junkers who were slavers who hi-jacked her freigher. Trent raised by you-know-who ("YKW", another ex-GMG merc.

YKW apprentices and trains Trent, when T turns 18, YKW gives him a Dagger repaired from a wreck equipped with class 1 BR guns. Trent sets off to avenge his mother and in the process comes across clues to a fortune that his Dad left behind somewhere in Sigma space.

YKW has a posse of ex-GMG mercs who fly Falcons and Hawks and also operate an old Kusari Battleship as their base. They also are looking for not just Trent's Dad's fortune but one left behind by the GMG Merc fleet when they were caught by surprise by the entire Rheinland fleet that was headed to the big showdown.

Renegade Junkers hang out in Edinburgh.

Retractions
Dublin still has mineable gas clouds.
Freeport 7 still exists, somehwere in / near Liberty.
The Glorious is still in operation.
Ships power units were capable of only 75% of the firepower of ships "today."
Shield Batteries cost 5 times as much and worked half as well.
Nanobots did not exist.
VHFs did not exist. - No Anubises, Eagles, Sabres or Titans.
No Classes 8 or 9 weapons existed.
The Special Class 10 weapons drains all power after 6 successive
shots ... they are mountable on the ships even if the max is class 1
on the ship. The lower the max, the fewer the shots you can get off.
Class 1 limited ship would be a one shot wonder with a class 10 mounted.

Campaign/Missions

Avenge mother and pursue Dad's fortune alone - or - Avenge mother and join up with YKW's mercs to find the lost GMG Merc Fleet's hoard.

Ending mission to get the final clue for Dad's fortune. End of story line: Trent head's off to Freeport 7.

Central Enemies: Renegade Junkers, Hogosha, Bundschuh, Mollies all in cahoots to find the GMG Merc hoard for themselves.

>>>>Edited to acknowledge Chips superior information instead of my wild a**ed guess on FP7's location.

CG to FMV? Perish forfend, I guess you don't remember the old days of massive amounts of cut scenes with too short sequences of gameplay! Not to mention the execrable (for the most part) acting! Nay, FMV adds naught but expense to gaming, IMHO.

@schmedley, FMV is more compelling. We now have DVD-Roms with lots more data space. Actors are more convincing. Live people interact as CGI people do not. Real women are more appealing!

That's all I need to say about that.

@Indy11, that is a really well thought out story line. Something I would enjoy playing through.

> Freeport 7 was in Sigma-17
> Trent is from Leeds
> He must have uncovered some star systems on his way back from Sigma-17

So why the hell aren't the systems discovered already?

Sir Spectre:

All of what you say is true, but I would prefer the space devoted to gameplay and not extraneous eye-candy. Something short, sweet and varied would be a good use of FMV; as opposed to the tiresome 'same old' sequences when you enter a bar, land on a planet/base/station, etc. Hmmm, perhaps some gratuitous scantily clad lovelies...all in good taste, naturally--just for variety!

Actually - FP7 is in the FP7 system - and NOT the sig 17 system. If you don't believe me, go into Freelancer directory on your comp, then to data, universe, systems, and look for a folder called FP7 - open and find FP7.ini

To further back it up, go to data folder, missions, M10A, and then using biniQ - open M10A.ini up. Check it out, here is a peek:

[MsnSolar
nickname = fp7base
faction = li_p_grp
system = FP7_system
position = 3600, 1000, -21000
orientation = 1, 0, 0, 0
archetype = freeport7
base = Li01_01_Base
label = lbl_fp7base
radius = 0

Please note that the bold line is corresponding to the system that the storyline action takes part in. FP7_system. Now then, which monkey still reckons its in a sigma17 system - as i can fill your screens up with all the info in the world pointing towards the location of FP7 the base, whereas only a fragment of wreck, and rumour (with a similar background) leaves people to think of the sigmas still.............ho hum

@Chips:

D'oh! Edits post.

@SnS:

Thank you. Glad you found it enterainting. Had a lot of fun thnking about it. I played around with a Pre-Prequel and I also played around with one where YKW is the central figure where Trent kind of falls into his lap, so to speak. There's lots of ways to prequel it. The retractions part is more difficult for me because I am not that comfortable with the mechanical issues.

I completely agree game should be full of features and fun. But Freelancer is on 1 CD whereas games like it with FMV such as Privateer 2 or Wing Commander 3, 4 & Prophecy had multiple CDs. WC4 was tops with 6 CDs. The story and FMV was fantastic, unlike anything ever before or since. But in this era all 6 CDs would fit on one or two DVDs at the most.

The biggest problem is not FMV takes too much room, but rather there are few or no games that have made the jump to DVD yet.

@Chips, I think you're turning into a computer. Your posts get more and more technical.

@Indy11

The retractions part is more difficult for me because I am not that comfortable with the mechanical issues.

Same here, but I just derived retractions on some things I didn't like with comparison to older games I enjoyed more in certain areas.

I'd give you reasons for Sigma 17 = FP7 but wrong forum

Post Thu Nov 06, 2003 10:42 am

Lol - i know why people think its Sigma 17 - but it really only has a shared background. There really is a FP7 system - which if you go to you will find is the CORRECT place in the storyline. Heck - use FLExplorer and you will find that system. It aint a spoiler as its the start of the game. If someone has the game, then they know about FP7!

Post Thu Nov 06, 2003 11:30 am

sorry then, its just reading through the neural log at the beginning it kinda seemed obvious that FP7 was in Sigma-17 because they met on Kurile. Plus I read a newsie that said that Kusari and Rheinland were bickering with Liberty because Liberty patrols were being placed in Sigma-17, so I guess 2+2=4.
