@Wolf, just don't use it, I don't really see why you think it should be retracted. I think some of the mechanics of it should be taken out or changed, because sometimes it is damn stupid. "The autos getting awfully close to that star, but I'm not worried, I'm sure it will change course." "Warning, shield fail--KABLOWEYBA!"

Well, the story could start with our hero working with that ship/parts dealer down on leeds. from there, why did he leave, to make his fortune on Freeport 7,
Ya maybe, but did he know he was gonna sign a deal with someone... he'd only just met the guy when he signed the deal... why was he on Freeport 7, such a remote lil outpost.
I smell a Criminal, always thought Trent was a little Dodgy.
Could it be our reluctant Hero has a past... Some Planetry Governors Daughter he mistakenly got caught with... Local police on his case again... Then there was that Space race, That ended up with Professor Kingston's Shiney Brand New MercXII Turbo "With 100Gb MP3 Player, As Standard" being totaled..!!!
Size the game RIGHT Down... 4-5 Systems with much more Local stuff happening... Maybe 1 or 2 Outlaying systems opening up a little later.
Trent starts off Driving a space Cab... Add fuel worries... Cash for "Space Tax"
In a *heart beat*, Everything changes...

Great first post Five Finger Discount! Very thorough. Welcome to The Lancers Reactor. I completely agree with having more local things happening, by skimming down the systems. It's like the difference by getting to know a city by driving around every street or knowing a few cities only somewhat by driving back and forth between them.
I'd much prefer to know one city really well, or one system with Tons more activity rather than what it is presently in Freelancer.

For a sequel...
How about a minor gap between FL and FL2, during which Trent changes sides? When you come back in, he can be frindly with the Outcasts, Corsairs, etc.
This would make for a completely new story line, so it wouldn't be the same old thing - helping the Military fight off the "Criminal Factions." You could have a turn being in a "Criminal Faction", and as some time would have passed between FL and FL2, mabe new systems have been discovered, new Jump Gates constructed, old ones ripped down due to unrepairable malfunctions, etc., etc.
As for a Retraction Pack, how about the only ships avalible for the player are light fighters? And now there are NPC Battleships. What about a missile with a blast radius of a small planet? That should be interesting. Of course it would have good range, but only a player could use it well to kill an enemy at long range. The NPCs would use it in close-combat. I have to say, I like the idea of going from CG caracters to filmed movies. How about making the game unbalanced? The battle ships could have 20 LVL. 10 turrets, and they could respond like light fighters. As an exact oppisite to unbalancing the game, how about going beyond a standard cruise, engine, and afterburner speed, and also give every ship an identicle, non-upgradable, gravitation shield, Light Fighter Capacity shield? Then they could throw in some story about how nobody had been able to dicover a better method of shielding ships, but, ironicly, people everywhare are constantly finding better ways of killing eachother with new weapons and so on.

Loose the tradelanes.
Loose the static planets.
That stuff is just not realistic.
I know a spacesim can't be 100% realistic, but non-rotating Planets?
Would it be so hard to create a system where all the planets are orbiting a sun? You wouldn't see them moving of course, that would be unrealistic aswel, but every time you re-enter the system, the plantes have changed position, depending on how long ago it has been since your last visit. So that if you leave the system and comeback right away, the planets are mostly on the same spot, but when you leave for a longer time, the planet is on the other side of the system.
That way you would loose the tradelanes, wich have no real value as they don't add anything to the game besides lane-hacking (and therefore a faction )
Just increase the cruise speed and go. Pirates will disrupt your cruise anyway.
Finally, I miss the fuelconsumption. You can trade H-fuel and make some money, but you don't use it in the game.
It would be much more realistic if you run out of fuel when you fly around for too long. And it actually forces you to dock with bases where you normally would never dock at.
I love the autopilot. I don't know what I'm doing different than you guys, but I never autopiloted into a planet or sun, never.

@Nickless, fuel consumption that's a great one, if for no other use than just some turbos, like in Privateer 2.
@Steel, could be a SL2, but I'm talking about how the Sirius system formed after they had arrived after--what was it?--800 years in sleeper ships. That would have nothing to do with SL2.

Errrr... I aways got edgy when the AutoPilot brought me close to any celestial bodies. I just turn it off then.
I'm sorry, but I just miss the sectional damage readings from Wing Commander and Star Lancer. The single bar for shields -maybe- but the armor should be in Quadrants.
Ya' kinda' get it?

How about Cardamine Vision? Thats a major component I feel was left out of the game. If you have some in your cargo hold, you should be able to choose to have Trent take one unit of it. Then, the entire game goes into slow motion, so you have more time to respond. This lasts for about 30 seconds, then the game gradually speeds back up, over a period of a minute or so. Of course this would only work in SP, but I think it would be great to have. (Remember, this is a RETRACTION).

@Clone, I will allow it as a retraction if you can explain how it is one. Because you also said this:
When you say it was left out, it makes me think you wanted it added into the game. Was it something that DA had originally worked on? If so, then a retraction can be called for, so as to return it to DA's beta. But I don't ever recall hearing about Cadamine Vision. If it was never on DA's plan for the game, then it would not be a retraction.
@Du7andal, I'm with you about sectional damage for the ships. But I think FL did an awesome job with losing wings and pieces of your ship which takes it to another level, but again the damage sensors don't really seem set up for it.
