This one I think is pretty definite--The Omega Nebula (yes, it has the same name in both Freelancer and real life). It has to be rotated a few degrees though to match up exactly.

Go to the Omega systems and you will see something in the background that reminds me of that Hourglass Nebula.

I'm pretty sure in some systems (Omicrons) you can see this one:

Freelancer's Universe names are from existing system in real life you have omicron systems like Omicrin centeaur omicron alpha, omicron gamma etc you also have teau systems and nebulas are also some existing nebulas in the universe. If not i'm sure that somewhere in the Universe is a nebula like these in freelancer.

I've done some research on nebulae (I find them very interesting) and I never came across the ones in Freelancer. I very seriously doubt they exist in r/l.

They were clearly based off existing ones though.

The border world/edge systems are named after greek letters which are used in pretty much every natural science. I don't think that's sufficient proof that FL's systems truely exist.

I think most of them are based on the real thing, albeit scaled and simplified, but defenately based on the real thing..
