Well, unfortunately you HAVE to do the story missions to continue. BUT no said that in between these missions you have to play by the rules hehehe....
When you have to go a place to do a story mission that your hostile with, it magically turn freindly! Result!

And if your gonna be a "real" smuggler ya gotta have Cardamine, always gotta have the Cardamine.....

You will always be called by Juni to do a mission untill you beat the SP. Once you've done that, you'll be free to do anything you want.

To be a smuggler you gotta have something to smuggle. Namely Cardamine (Sweeet Cardamine) or Artifacts. And just try to take it through "civilised" systems... If ya wanna play with the big leauges follow these simple rules
1 Frag the Authorities
2 Blast your opponents Cargo Crates
3 Pick on commercial shipping
4 Hate Bounty Hunters
5 Hate Xenos (Unless you wanna get good with em)
6 Target your fav factions enemies
7 Try and do good deeds for your faction
8 You cant be freindly with ALL of the crims, aint possible
9 If your carrying junk and your threatened, drop it, everyones happy
10 GO MAD!!! KILL THEM ALL!!!!

But before I degenerate into Cardamine induced ranting, smuggling is one of my favorite past times, especially when I hijack my Dromedary full of Cardamine.....
Smuggling, In my opinion, makes Freelancer a really really good game... now to try it on MP.... ohhh yes, killing everyone in a Cardamine induced fevor....
