Mooring

Can someone tell me what a mooring bay does? Maybe this has been posted a few times but can you tell me now?

Do you mean those mooring rings that sort of float near the docking rings? I suppose a freighter could tie up to them, though why I don't know they'd want to. Looks like a good way to be attacked by pirates with your trousers down.

Most likely just put there as eye candy.

This mooring rings do have a purpose. Transports dock there to have cargo loaded/unloaded by heavy lifters, who can fit into a docking ring and get cargo crates from the planet surface.
Simple, eh?

If you lwatch transports there are mooring places on most stations as well. Its just a pity that you dont actually get to see heavy lifters moving cargo around all the time and instead get to watch cargo containers magically disappear.

I sometime scan a train and follow it when it's docking to see if his cargo changes, it never does.

Equally odd is how a large wrecked freighter may have been carrying far less cargo than you can fit into the hold of your light fighter.

p.s. I'd seen heavy lifters and repair ships landing on planets. But that's all they seem to do ... land on planets!

Hmmm, must be some unfinished programming... ah well, I dont pay much attention to the freighters anyway, too many fighters too get to the goods.... shame, I wanted to see a repair ship/heavy lifter in action, maybe in a mod one day....

It's interesting to go up close and watch the asteroid miners in action. Wonder what would happen if you attacked one. Could you blow it up? Would the miners' guild put a bounty on your head?

You may be right about "unfinished". Why go to the trouble of putting so much detail into the ateroid miners, when they just ignore you during the game?
