Auto Turrets! WHY NOT!!!!

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

Without an auto turret function, the rear turret in most fighters is a useless waste of money. It was the same in Privateer. What good is a tail gun when you have to get up out of the pilot's seat and go fire it ... while your ships flies on with no one at the helm??? The bad guys must have auto turrets, since they can fire back at you while fliying. If they can do it, why can't we?

good point. I have an idea! No silly rear turrets! No seriously, there needs to be a better way to aim behind you

Phooey. I need a new quote.

Aye, I have to agree, currently the turret view is hopeless; when you fly a freighter and you want to make full use of the turrets you have to give up flying. And there's no point in hell to set a waypoint and go to autopilot and then go to the turret mode, cause the second you start flying in a straight constant line you are pretty much dead meat...

Autoaim (not autofire) would be quite nice, as then I'd be able to fully use my freighter (or fighter with turret) to it's full efficiency...that is being able to fly AND shoot at the same time. I won't really care much about the accuracy as long as the turrets aim towards the target(s)

'Turret' has to be one of the most mispelled words in existance. This is just a random observation. I even have a few friends who say 'turrent' on a regular basis. It's odd, because the two do not sound even remotely the same, unless you're talking to someone with a lisp.. OK, i know.. I'm wayyyy off topic. 8D

Autoturrets would cause players to only use them, because people by nature are creatures who will always try to win in the easiest, most effort-free(read that: skilless) way possible. That means, of course, Nomad guns, head on chicken passes, and of course, people demanding autoaim turrets because they don't feel like hitting v for the two seconds it takes to aim the turret and pop a few shots off. Look, AI's will never kill you in two seconds, and if you allow another player to get behind you in the first place, you're screwed already.

Auto-aiming turrets would kill FL, pure and simple.

In other words, FL would become dominated by sklless pothead freaks who sit in their chairs smoking joints while they stare blankly into the screen mashing the fire key.

But maybe I'm being overly cynical.

I will aid them when I can...if they give me a percentage of the salvage from whatever they frag along the way. Hell, they were even so kind as to sell me a ship after one of my jobs with them, and I've been flying her ever since. But god help them if someone puts a bounty on THEIR heads, for I don't care who I hunt for, as long as their live capture(or untimely death) can get me enough credits to buy a decent sized mug of my favorite drink."- A Freelance Bounty Hunter.
