I guess we can agree that light fighters have better manuverability and heavy fighters have better firepower. If both are put in the hands of very skilled pilots who have a lot of expirience with their class of fighter, than they are about even. Every dogfight is unique, and very few very weak ships can be killed with one shot. If you aim for maneuverability, you always stand a chance of out-flying your foe. If you go for firepower, you can only pray that your opponent isn't flying with Codename weapons. In SP, where you can be assured that you are maxed out and everyone is beneath you, heavy fighters reign supreme. In MP, where there's always somebody with bigger guns, a light fighter's agillity is a very tempting way to assure survival. Plus, being a great pilot doesn't hurt. --- RR16

There are some light fighter mods where you can have level 10 weapons and shields etc on a smaller, more maneouvarable fighter, I think it's unfait to blame the creators of Freelancer for this, there's a good reason.

You wouldn't expect to find a 4 ltr, v12 engine in a Nissan Micra would you?

The powerplant and more powerful weapons, shield systems etc have surely got to be physically bigger than the smaller ones.

The same arguement doesn't apply to Freighters, or probably even heavy fighters but certainly does light ones.

The other problem is balance, if the smaller ships carry as much firepower as the larger ones then they would rule all, it's a trade off: lighter weapons for more maneuverability or more firepower for less maneuvrability.
