Part of the problem is... if your target has 1 unit of shield power remaining, and you hit it with a blast from a Diamondback, the shield will still absorb it so you do no hull damage. Same thing if you hit it with a cannonball, sunslayer or a ripper mine. Varying projectile speeds actually helps with this somewhat... for instance, on a Sabre you could use a Rapier turret (class 8 pulse weapon, 700 m/s projectile speed) and its shot will land slightly before those from your 600 m/s guns (codenames, nomads, etc) softening up the shield for these big guns.
However, don't use loadouts where the projectile speeds vary by more than 100 m/s or so as it'll mess up your auto-targeting.
