"Best Ship" threads - a possible solution

OK, granted that most users here are probably sick to death of the subject... but also consider that given the amount of times it comes up, there's clearly interest on the part of a lot of users that want to talk about it. So, instead of banning the subject, which really isn't fair to those of us who DO want to discuss it, I propose that you make ONE "Best ship" thread, and sticky-post it at the top of the forum. That'll give an outlet for anyone who wants to yak about it, while sparing the old timers from having to see hundreds of such threads. You could do the same thing with the joystick issue, or any other recurrent topic that most of you are sick of. Those of you who are bored with such subjects, just don't open 'em.

Whaddaya think?

We didn't sticky them, but we did try to consolidate the posts. Now new problem arises - people LOVED to talk and brag about their favorite ships and to dis and mock the other ships. Soon, everybody realized that a Best Ship thread was a guaranteed way to have an at least 3 pages of response thread. All those threads outlived their intelligence after the 1st pages. Everybody wanted to make their own best ship thread, or to at least participate in a popular thread!

Then we got to rank. The more you post in this forum, the higher your rank is. These popular threads are an easy way to mask your spamming (if you're gonna hide a tree...). All they had to do is respond and counteract and repeat, vaguely masquerading their posts as "just having and defending my opinion". Spam spreads like Portuguese forest fire in the middle of an European heatwave, and when everybody saw that they could get away with the spamming boosting rank, they wanted a piece of the pie. Even when the threads got locked, those post counts remain. They simply started over and no surprise these new threads suffered the same fate of being hijacked assimilated into the Spam Collective.

Then there was the flame war. Not all, of these people were able to argue as adults (when I said not all, I mean most). There was a case when one poster flamed another with a threatening E-MAIL for failing to agree with him.

I don't think that the board is ready to accommodate the "Titan Taters and Livers" [sic for a while. Not now.

Some good points.... I can certainly see people having problems with the whole deal, what with all of that behavior going on. However, it still leaves those of us who DO wish to legitmately discuss the subject without any means to do so... it's something I wanna talk about and it's now a taboo subject due to the behavior of certain individuals. Sheesh.

I don't have an easy answer for you LL, it's just gonna be like this for a long while, since history has proven, a thread about wich ship is the best doesn't bring up the best in most humans.
It's like politics, everyone has his own statements and opinions and is ready to defend them, sometimes even with the use of force.
To bad, I know, but as long as people aren't ready to respect other people's opinions, this is a big nono.

How about just making sure it "hurts in the worst way" whenever anybody posts about them ...

Also, there isn't a whole lot to discuss. The designers gave agility to the Eagle and an additional forward-firing hardpoint to the Sabre, but they forgot to give the Titan even the tiniest advantage whatsoever. The marginally stronger powerplant of the Titan is negated by the fact that the most powerful guns drain no energy whatsoever, and the marginally better armour and nano/batt capacity is negated by the pityful maneouvrability.

The question Eagle vs. Sabre can only be solved by duelling between equally-skilled players, but I think it is very difficult to find players that have the same skill level and whose skills are not biased towards the fighting styles associated with either the Eagle or the Sabre. Not to mention that a skilled player in a class 6er like the Drake or Anubis will toast an unskilled one in any of the class 10ers in short order. Every player has to decide for themselves whether the Eagle or the Sabre suits their style better, and it seems that every noob has to learn for themselves that flying the Titan is grabbing for the short end of the stick. It is more expensive, so it must be better.

If the sticky solution is gonna work then only if it contains both an un-biased, factual comparison of the class 10ers and believable experience reports of players with some clout (e.g. Commodores rather than 1st Lieutenants ).

You draw a false analogy between board whores and experienced players.

In regard to Lethal Larry's point, I think he is correct, try for yourself a search that will yield one of the legendary "best ship" threads and you will not hit paydirt. The search engine won't search back any earlier than June of this year, even if you request posts from before then.

Clearly this is the hot topic of discussion, and people still want to discuss it. If it brings out poor behaviour as alluded to by FearFactory, then so be it, poor behaviour is the fault of those displaying it, not those who choose a topic.

This is a board for a gaming community, that community is multi-faceted and multi-generational, it will therefore be subject to the same cyclical characteristics of any other community. You and your friends discuss the state of the nation just as your grandparents did before you. Something being discussed umpteen times before does not necessarily negate the merit of the discussion.

So long live the "best ship" thread (as if it will ever die), long live the same question being asked because it is new to the person that asks it. Long live newbies because they keep games fresh, and death to the post count. Not that I'm biased.

And in conclusion, the Titan SUKS U NOOBS! ;-)

I agree that a best ship thread should be kept around, but i dunno if it is feasable as it would get quite long. I also agree about the Titan And that people just need to have good manners and use as stated FACTS. Anyway, I think It looks like we ought to have such a thread and not just talk about it.

We who are about to die salute you!

Sherlog,

Taking you off at a tangent for a minute. You said the most powerful weapons drain no energy whatsoever. Are there guns out there that drain none or were you referring to missiles/torpedos of some sort? Ithink I'm missing something here? Yes I'm a semi-noob for all you flamers out there - relying on Sherlogs usual patience in these matters................

If you throw enough mud ..some's gonna stick.

@jat71 Yes, there are guns that drain no energy and that have more punch than even the mighty Kraken Type 2 and CODENAME guns. These guns cannot be found in shops or wrecks - you have to go to the end of the world (either one) and scour the clouds to find a graveyard haunted by evil translucent ghosts. Also, you need to be wealthy (level 34+ should be fine) so that the gods of chance look favourably upon you.

Perhaps the 'recurring thread' problem could be partially solved by making a sticky 'directory' topic with links to half a dozen of the best threads for each for the recurring topics.

the problem with best ship thraeds is there is no one answer
it depends what you want from the ship
there fore any thread on the subject will become long and heated not to mention repetitive
the old saying horses for courses comes to mind

Also, best ship for SP is not necessarily the same for MP. The Titan is not a bad ship for the SP game. But against real players in MP, it's a different story.

A moot point, there is no "Best Ship" in the game.
I know peeps who'd take on 10 eagles in a sabre an win,and vice-versa
it is really a matter of personal preference
AND the titan was made wrong. Each fin should've had a turret at the end, ditto the wingtips, cargo 200 and presto the best FREIGHTER in the game (i am trying to mod mine like so)

oh.....ya

Post Thu Aug 28, 2003 7:19 pm

I think the point is voicing one's opinion of the best ship, not which one in fact is the best ship. Opinions and facts are two different worlds altogether....
