Is it just me or.....

I just got Freelancer a week ago (great game, BTW), and after getting myself decked out after the main quest (Titan, hidden wrecks, etc...), I just noticed something. In Rheinland space, there's a faction called the Bundschuh. Yeah, well that translated means "Federal Shoe". Well, is this just for laughs, or is there a reason behind this?

i think the fact that you didnt know of the bundschuh prior to your little escapade is much funnier than the federal shoe part

im making toast

No, I noticed it before, but it's just that I couldn't register here (it kept complaining that my passwords didn't match or something, but they did). But anyway, are they based off an old Earth nation that was ruled by radioactive shoes? What's goin' on with the name?

Maybe they're saboteurs ...

Here's what google has to say:

Like those who in the middle ages marched with the "Bundschuh" (2) to bring the Kingdom of God on earth, although indeed they were the political opposition against feudal society, many revolutionary leftists of the 19th and 20th centuries have had false ideas about the real meaning of their own purpose and acts. Absolutely convinced that they were the champions of a proletarian revolution, the revolution for which they strove has achieved nothing more than the transformation of private capitalism into state capitalism.

2 The "bundschuh" was painted on the banners of the revolting farmer. It was a shoe very different from the beautiful shoes of the knights. So, there couldn't be any mistake about what sort of people were behind those banners.

but I like the radioactive shoes idea better

So once again, a historical reference behind a faction. The Bundschuh in Freelancer had exactly the same problem: They helped a revolution only to see private capitalism change to state capitalism.

The whole Rheinland stuff is based on history:

First, the 80-year-war, which is their version of the first world war.
After that, Rheinland was in deep economical problems (Germany 1914-1939). People would be lucky to have a job in one of the factories, where working conditions were bad... Freelancer version: "where working condtions in the Daumann and Kruger factories were bad."
Then Hitler comes up. In Freelancer, the Nomads take over.
Germany annexes a few countries, and starts WWII -- and Rheinland basically takes over Sigma 13 and Omega 7, and then starts a war against Kusari.

anchors the story in a more believable universe doesn't it, when you have these historical parallels that you can relate to.

Does the Queen of Bretonia have looney children? :-)

p.s. And the Lone Star medal ... sounds like it came out of a cereal box.

lol Puke and theyre all divorced too I bet!

i wonder... is Queen Carina supposed to be descended from our current line of blue-blood slack-chinned inbred wastrels or is she part of some new dynasty? It wouldn't surprise me at all for some of our lots descendants to make sure they got on a sleeper ship to a new star system, I bet they didnt even have to open the doors of their cryopods, some flunky would do it for them.

Not every name of the factions come from english! the Bundshuh is a german name I don't know what it means but it hassn't got anything to do with a shoe!

Post Sat Aug 23, 2003 5:14 pm

Queen Carina is probably a member of the House of Blair ...

I don't know what the true translation of Bundshuh is but I bet they all have hairy armpits!

On second thoughts strike that last comment, I suppose it could be taken as racist, sorry....(but I bet they do!!!)....

Sometimes phrases are lost in translations. for example, French Canadian McDonalds use the logo J'M, with the golden arches replacing the "M", because in French, J'm is a abriviated form of "to love". But that would be lost on our English speaking minds. --- RR16

Why does Rheinland have to be difficult...
The other pirates all have nice easy names to work out:
Corsairs- pirates
Lane Hackers- hack tradelanes
Blood Dragons- 'honorable pirates'
Mollys-(okay so thats hard but their home system should make it all obvious...)
etc...
Then Rheinland has:
LWB- Looking at the full name and being English just dont mix...
Red Hessians- okay... theyre hessians and theyre... angry?? how should i know
Bundshuch- Federal shoe, what more can I say
