branching away from the main story line

when can i branch off from the main story line? the game makes you follow the plot from the first mission. can i just ignore it, and go off and do what i want? or is there a certain period within the story that you can branch off on your own? thanks.

After most campaign missions you get a bit of free time for exploring, getting rich etc. pp. During the first three freelancing periods your movement is a bit restricted but starting with the fourth freelancing period you can go wherever you please.

In fact, in one of my campaigns I did precisely that: during the fourth freetime I did a tour of almost all of Sirius in my Dagger (excepting about half a dozen systems that were too hot), took about 100 missions, killed about 1500 enemy fighters (most of those off-duty) and earned $2 million during that time.

However, most ships/equipment/jobs have certain level requirements and during the SP campaign this means that you have to go back to Juni eventually and fly a mission for her, in order to advance your level. This has nothing to do with your chosen path - Juni does not care at all whether you are a lawful citizen or a pirate, a fighter or a trader.

thanks sherlog.

but to fly most of Juni's missions, don't you need to be in a fighter? Which means if you are a transport guy, you have to unload your freighter for a fighter?

Is there a time limit of avoiding her missions? Right now I just got all the jump codes and was playing around with making some cash between Denver/Pueblo and Manhattan/Trenton Outpost... I made a run after she said to meet her at Manhattan, and she was still there when I got there. I am wondering if you don't meet her for too long she will drop you like a bad habbit?

I did most of Juni's missions in a Dromedary Freighter. I'm basically a peaceful, trading kind of guy.

Juni is very patient. Other than the occasional reminder to meet her, there are no dire consequences to blowing her off. You can't level up, but that there is the price of freedom.

What happens if you decline a storyline mission when she asks?

And God said,

And there was light.

Nothing bad willhappen. You can go back and Juni will ask you again and you can accept or decline again. But trying not to spoil, there is a certain point that once you accept there is no other option until the misson pack is finished.

Also, if you decline then you get to see what happens if you do that, and you can always accept later on. But if you accept right away then you'll never know what happens ...

The campaign missions tend to be more difficult in freighters but still doable if you can handle your ship well. It's just that you don't get much combat practice if you work as a peaceful trader.
