kill engine

i was thinking - well, quarter - thinking whether this would be a spoiler but decided against it.
you know the engine kill option? by default its 'z'. it kills your engine and lets you go in the same direction in disregard to whever you'r facing at the same speed-with very little deceleration. i was thinking, if you afterburn a short while, just to get you up to 200, then lock the kill engine, you'd keep going at 200 with little need to maintain that speed. then that would kill the need to get advanced afterburners that give you 125 time thingo.

Yup.

Try using it when you don't feel like taking out that last wave of bounty hunters that keep disrupting your cruise.... Burn away from them then e-kill and turn around to face them while still traveling away.

the thinking bit is only how i thought it'd be a spoiler, but maybe not. and i find this quite useful. e-kill and you can save up quite a bit on afterburner fuels.

it's very useful. and those dumb ai-ships doesn't
turn on their cruise engines to catch you.

it's the easiest way to get out of a fight.

Cool never thought of that

i ate a booger so you ate a turd.

its useful when u trying to run and cant use cruise and have to recharge afterburners

Post Mon Aug 04, 2003 3:16 pm

u can even go 300 and shoot around in the unmodded game.

go first to cruise speed and press th e-kill button and shoot around...

Yep, works with cruises too. Fire them up, e-kill, and turn freely. All weapons armed at 300 (Although it ticks down slowly)
However if you use ANY thrusters (Strafing included) you lose the speed. But you can turn.
Spolier!!!!

Handy trick on Tekagi's Arch. Use it to fly past the cruiser and launch about 6 torps on the way. The sheer speed will keep you safe for the first pass.

Engine kill for combat is much more "realistic" in that you have to counter-thrust to slow and turn around. Much more fun.

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

Yeah but Elite frontier had "realtic" combat and that was the worst space sim since Space Invaders.

I tried this early in the game because I played Tachyon:The Fringe quite extensively, and there was an option to toogle this more realistic flight behaviour in Tachyon.
It is quite logical that CD don't work since your are moving on an acquired speed, you don't need thrust unless you want to alter course or speed. CD are suppose to prevent your engine from working. When using engine kill, your engine does not function anyway.

Cool, thx for the tip

Ya, I loved Tachyon:The Fringe and it's Slide function. Worked a whole lot better with the Joystick than FL Kill Engine!
