I played this game called freespace..

First off all, I have no idea if this game is ever related to freelancer.

Freelancer is a hell lot better than freespace, as the atmosphere is never dull.

on the other hand, in freespace, when a capital ship warp in, everybody goes OMG! it's a capital ship!. But in freelancer, when a capital ship warp in, means it's another battleship kill.

anyway, have yet to find a game that equals freelancer in terms of both atmosphere, gameplay (using mouse..) and graphic smoothness.
when is the next expansion coming up?

Thou shalt not mock Freespace! in its time, Freespace was top of the line graphics. It came out like 10 years ago, you can't really compare it with Freelancer's graphics.

FS is sooooo much better than FL, just my opinion, but I've played FS2 all the way thru over 40 times. ^_^

i definitely loved it when the massive freespace cap ships warped in they were sort of awe inspiring, although in freeLANCER theyre way to sissy. memories of my freespace days r flooding back to me now. It was a great game. lancers good too but it just doesnt give u the same feel.

Unpro you are wa-ay in the minority here.. FreeSpace OWNS Freelancer. If Freelancer was a more complete game then maybe it would be the other way round. But it isn't
FreeSpace's atmosphere was brilliant. The first time the Shivans attack, the sighting of the Lucifer, the fight against Demon class Destroyers... The opening of Freespace 1 is the best opening sequence for any game ever bar none. The scream of that Apollo pilot still sends goose bumps over my skin.
However, even FreeSpace is over shadowed...
FreeSpace 2 is quite frankly a "Perfect" game. The game (Without moddifiying the genre) cannot be improved in anyway. The graphics are stunning (I prefer them to Freelancers.) The music is spine tingly chilling, the atmosphere dark and foreboding. The story is awesome and keeps you guessing whats happening right up until the very last mission, and indeed the end sequence. The controls are perfect and fully adaptable to your needs, the hud interface is the best I've ever seen, much better than the excuse of one in FreeLancer.
The back of the box for FS2 says: "After 32 years the Shivans are back, and they're wondering what happened to their scouting party…" and THEY'RE NOT MESSING AROUND. At the end there's more Shivan ships in one system alone than there was in the ENTIRE first invasion.
The only way FreeSpace 2 could be improved would be to make it bigger (And it had about 40 missions I think) or to make it open ended like Freelancer. That is the ONLY advantage Freelancer has, you are free. FreeSpace 2 is a structured game. If you could put trading, purchases of new ships, career paths etc into FreeSpace 2 I would seriously never buy another space sim again. EVER.

FreeSpace 2 was stunningly awesome. I can still remeber the fight between the Collosus and the Santhanas. Never before have I felt so small and insignificant against a ship to ship fight.

If it wasn't for the inky blackness of the night you wouldn't appreciate the brilliance of the stars...

And no, they're not realted.
Freelancer is a sequel to Starlancer (Well, not a true sequel, but set in the same universe)

Freespace is an outgrowth of Descent (Remember that?)
You had Descent 1, 2 & 3.
But after Descent 2 part of the team that made it broke off and formed Volition inc. They used the same world, the same story, same universe etc. and made Descent: Freespace. The expnasion pack for Freespace followed, Silent Threat. And then there was Freespace 2.
Sadly there are no signs of FreeSpace 3 ever being made (Despite the very open ending of FreeSpace 2) cos Interplay are complete and utter w@nkers who don't want to use the licensing rights, but won't sell them either. The even more frustrtating fact is that Volition Inc. are more than willing to do FS3. I'm boycotting Interplay games as a result.

Quote from Fear Factor: Thou shalt not mock Freespace! in its time, Freespace was top of the line graphics. It came out like 10 years ago, you can't really compare it with Freelancer's graphics.

Sorry Fear Factor, but I think FreeSpace 2 graphics are better than Freelancers. Freelancer is full of colour in the background, which makes it less aprreciative. FreeSpace 2 is neatly "Touched up" by colour, not overpowered. See my sig. Says it all.

the hud/instruments in fs2 were great
and the story good but it was left very open shame they never made a sequel
it was a brilliant game
that and starlancer gave me weeks of fun

As I said in another thread, these are two DIFFERENT type games. I loved playing Free Space, but it was "do this mission, now do that one". I enjoy Freelancer because it is OPEN ENDED. When you finish the missions in Free Space, that's all there is folks! But it is a pity there wasn't a follow up. I'm getting a bit pissed off at the games that promise a sequel ... and never seem to deliver.

p.s. Nobody seems to mention Homeworld. Another different type game, but one I had a lot of fun with.

i've never heard of freespace. and it seems like it's not
possible to get it from the stores. it's too old.

argh.

yea. homeworld. an excelent game. and beautiful.

but again, after have done the missions, the party's over.
and in multiplayer everything end up on killing eachother
as fast as possible.

i'm still waiting to get my adsl-connection fixed. i hate
not being able to reach the multiplayer space in freelancer.

You can get it form the Underdogs for free. Best time you'll spend downloading something I promise you.

Do a search on Google.com for "Freespace" or "Freespace 2 buy retail"
or something to that effect. You'll find some software vendors still carrying leftovers.... UNLESS I SNATCH THEM ALL UP.
It's cheap nowadays.... and still the best game I've ever played.
I'm feeling you loud and clear on this one, Lutz!!!!

I love FL, but FSi and FSII will NEVER dislodge themselves from my heart.
I ACHE for the day someone revives that title, and at the same time FEAR what the might do to destroy.

If the makers of these two games ever got together and disappeared for 2 years.....

I can't think about it... the thought is making me loose sleep already.

Whoa! Looks like it is actually going UP in price.. Cheapest I found it for out there was 29.99..

I really wish they'd marketed that title better - Then Volition would still be around and I'd be flying a Herc ver.III limited (or something) instead of a Drake or Eagle right now.

We can only hope... (do we dare..)

One more thing...

Like I said - the distributors of this title REALLY screwed over the developers and the game tanked as far as numbers are concerned - even tho it won a TON of awards and is hailed by many as the best space sim ever.

Rub it in the companies face that they canned "THE BEST" there is by actually PAYING for the game if you can.
A resurgence of interest in this title AFTER its "failure" would SUPERB!!!!
