Unpro you are wa-ay in the minority here.. FreeSpace OWNS Freelancer. If Freelancer was a more complete game then maybe it would be the other way round. But it isn't
FreeSpace's atmosphere was brilliant. The first time the Shivans attack, the sighting of the Lucifer, the fight against Demon class Destroyers... The opening of Freespace 1 is the best opening sequence for any game ever bar none. The scream of that Apollo pilot still sends goose bumps over my skin.
However, even FreeSpace is over shadowed...
FreeSpace 2 is quite frankly a "Perfect" game. The game (Without moddifiying the genre) cannot be improved in anyway. The graphics are stunning (I prefer them to Freelancers.) The music is spine tingly chilling, the atmosphere dark and foreboding. The story is awesome and keeps you guessing whats happening right up until the very last mission, and indeed the end sequence. The controls are perfect and fully adaptable to your needs, the hud interface is the best I've ever seen, much better than the excuse of one in FreeLancer.
The back of the box for FS2 says: "After 32 years the Shivans are back, and they're wondering what happened to their scouting party…" and THEY'RE NOT MESSING AROUND. At the end there's more Shivan ships in one system alone than there was in the ENTIRE first invasion.
The only way FreeSpace 2 could be improved would be to make it bigger (And it had about 40 missions I think) or to make it open ended like Freelancer. That is the ONLY advantage Freelancer has, you are free. FreeSpace 2 is a structured game. If you could put trading, purchases of new ships, career paths etc into FreeSpace 2 I would seriously never buy another space sim again. EVER.
FreeSpace 2 was stunningly awesome. I can still remeber the fight between the Collosus and the Santhanas. Never before have I felt so small and insignificant against a ship to ship fight.
If it wasn't for the inky blackness of the night you wouldn't appreciate the brilliance of the stars...
