Is there any difference between guns and turrets or is it just so you have to waste alot of cash when buying a freighter?
Turrets are mostly used for Freighters. Freighters can mount upto 3 normal weapons and upto 4/5/6 turrets (not sure about the max turret that can be mounted tho)
Light Fighters and Heavy or Very Heavy Fighters can use only ONE turret.
Eagle = 1 turret =firing backwards
Titan = same as Eagle
Sabre = 1 turret shooting forward
Basicly turrets are not really worth for a fighter EXCEPT the Sabre. I've never seen a player that can utilise the backwards firing turret with any accuracy. the AI uses it 10000000 times better then ANY human player I've ever seen. Imagine that you are chased by the AI, you press V (for looking backwards) and then try to evade his shots while you are looking backwards trying to shoot with the turret.
Some mount a pulse turret (best against shield, useless against hulls) and some mount a turret for extra hull damage. Again, the turret is mostly usefull if you have the Sabre or a Frieghter. Other then that, they are IMO useless to buy. Equip them only if you salvage one from your opponents. Don't spend any cash on it if you have a fighter.

There are two other fighters besides the Sabre that have forward-firing turret slots. One of them is very easy to get during the campaign ( ) and both are really excellent ships that stand out among other fighters of the same class.
The main difference between guns and turrets is that guns can fire only in a restricted arc (the firing cone) while turrets can fire pretty much everywhere except when ship or shield are between them and the target. Also, it is not possible to obtain missile turrets for fighters or freighters and so you can mount only the normal missile launchers that go into weapon slots (not turret slots).
As a rule, turrets tend to have higher range than equivalent guns and different projectile speed; sometimes the latter can make it difficult to plan a good weapon loadout with matched projectile speed (but there are also cases where things work out perfectly - think Outcast particle turret).

-Entropy- #3 is the first of the 'blade' series (i.e. the little brother of the Sabre). The best of all fighters sold in Liberty, but not the easiest to get ... It is mostly the forward-firing turret that makes it stand out, but the comparatively large cargo hold is also very nice. And on top of that it is one of the coolest ships in the game.
P.S.: the smallest of the predatory fish has exactly the same stats as #3 but it lacks the forward-firing turret. This makes quite a bit of difference.

Has anybody tried out the stiletto? If the other two versions of the BW series have forward-firing turrets, then the medium version might have it as well.

there are lots of ships that have turrents and any turrent has its normal gun counter part. and the turrents are usefull when you being chased by a single class 1 or 2 ship and you have class 8 turrent and don't feel like turning to chase the ship and its an easier mark cause the supied IA won't really get out of the way till they are in 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 pieces
