The first of the games was ELITE, way back in 1985 or so. You can find it on line in a PC conversion or an adaption from a BBC, Spectrum, Apple IIe or other early PC. Still fun, but the graphics are fairly simple. There were follow ups to it, but none were really as good.

Privateer came out about 10 years ago, when PCs were 486s. And a few years later, there was Privateer II -- a similar game. I enjoyed them both.

About 1999 or 2000, there was HARDWAR -- a Freelancer type game that takes place on one of the moons of Jupiter. You have been cut off from earth for generations and are stuck on the moon, trying to get off of it. There's also a nice "mystery" to solve. Quite a good game. You can buy different ships, buy your own base, become a merchant-pirate-bounty hunter. There was supposed to be a follow up, but I've yet to see it.

A year or two ago, X-Beyond the Frontier came out. It's a fun game, but takes forever to play! You can spend weeks just trading before you get your ship up to where you can start doing exciting things. There is a sequel to it too. (Forget the name.)

Supposedly, a Russian company was working on an Elite type game. But I've never heard anymore about it. Some Elite fans are also working on a new version based on the original game. Hasn't been finished though.

The sequel was X-tension and don't bother trying to find it. All remaining copies are german only although you might be able to get an english copy on e-bay. If you do speak german then go for it

There's another sequel called X2 and it looks awesome. It's due out in September or October. It seems to have something FL lacks...DEPTH

There's also a version of elite written in C++ for pc that works great. Do a google search for elite pc and you should find it. Once you look past the graphics it's as engrossing as ever.

FreeSpace 2 is good, but is story driven and non-open ended. Truly awesome fighting though.

If it wasn't for the inky blackness of the night you wouldn't appreciate the brilliance of the stars...

freespace 2 is very good but i still cant help having a craving for the odd game of starlancer

I've got the Elite PC version on my computer. But one of the original Elite programmers bitched about it and made them take the download off the site a few months back.

The file's not very big though. Somebody could probably e-mail it to folks.

What, nobody mentions Tachyon: The Fringe?

Best joystick game I've ever played.

You can buy the German copy of X-TEnsion and download a 250+ MB English patch. Of course the next title in that franchise is scheduled to come out in October, so it might be worth waiting for that.

Hey Kedyns, would that be Escape Velocity Nova? I've only heard of and played the original Escape Velocity and EV Override? Where'd you find it? I've noticed a huge number of similarities to Freelancer too. Plus if you have ResEdit, changing the specs for anything in the game is EXTREMELY easy.

Oooo, pretty....what do we blow up first?
