The first of the games was ELITE, way back in 1985 or so. You can find it on line in a PC conversion or an adaption from a BBC, Spectrum, Apple IIe or other early PC. Still fun, but the graphics are fairly simple. There were follow ups to it, but none were really as good.
Privateer came out about 10 years ago, when PCs were 486s. And a few years later, there was Privateer II -- a similar game. I enjoyed them both.
About 1999 or 2000, there was HARDWAR -- a Freelancer type game that takes place on one of the moons of Jupiter. You have been cut off from earth for generations and are stuck on the moon, trying to get off of it. There's also a nice "mystery" to solve. Quite a good game. You can buy different ships, buy your own base, become a merchant-pirate-bounty hunter. There was supposed to be a follow up, but I've yet to see it.
A year or two ago, X-Beyond the Frontier came out. It's a fun game, but takes forever to play! You can spend weeks just trading before you get your ship up to where you can start doing exciting things. There is a sequel to it too. (Forget the name.)
Supposedly, a Russian company was working on an Elite type game. But I've never heard anymore about it. Some Elite fans are also working on a new version based on the original game. Hasn't been finished though.
