Idiots guide to running Mods

I will shortly be wanting to try out mods, and the rebalance one sounds best. I don't want anything that allows you to cheat, but I would like more out of what I feel is an incomplete game. So, I've looked through the forums, but I'm still none the wiser as to some stuff to do with modding. So maybe some of the peeps here in the know would like to answer what I've affectionately called "The idiots guide to running mods" or more accurately "Lutz is a n00b, help him mod" Guide.
Any help is greatly appreciated guys.

1. What is in the Rebalance Mod? (Ships, extra missions, commodities, ship patrols etc?)
2: How do you install a mod? (Unzip it? Download and mess around with shed loads of options?)
3: Are they easy to install? (Assume I'm a complete n00b with PC's)
4: Can you un-install them without messing around with the original game?
5: Where are the latest links for all things need to put on a mod, say rebalance?

I wouldn't say I'm the total 'mod guru', but I think I may be able to help (a little)

1:The info for Rebalance v.2.01 is here, This mod has lots of new ships, better missions: better paid, more variety, etc., ships go different speeds, factions fly new ships, not sure about patrols and commodities but I know there are new systems and bases.
--oh, also a patch (unzip directly into .../Freelancer Mod Manager/mods/flrebalance201full folder.)

2:easiest way to install rebalance is get the FLMM 1.2
Once you have your Freelancer Mod Manager directory, download the mod file into that directory and open it up, Mod Manager should recognize it as a FL mod, and install it automatically, so no replacing files yourself

3:um, pretty much (go into FLMM select the mod then click "activate mod")

4:Usually, unless you install patches over your existing FL directory, FLMM does all of this for you (meaning install patches in the Freelancer Mod Manager directory, not the Freelancer directory)

5:everything should be in the Downloads section; different mods, patches, etc (Multiple mods on top of the Rebalance Mod, and mods that modify many different aspects of the game don't usually work )

Chiggy, thats awesome. When I get home tonight I think I'll be playing around.
Last question though: Do I keep my curretn game, or do I have to start over again? And I think someone siad you could fight battleships in the Rebalance mod?

Thanks again.

Hmm, to answer your questions, you ::should:: be able to keep your current game, although it might crash 'cause of certain saved game files. And, yes, that person was right there are many capital ships cruisin all over! pfff, even rheinland above manhattan. usually a couple battleships, surrounded by the usual cruisers, gunboats, and heavy fighters, quite fun! (much harder to kill police depots in a starflyer tho lol)

Nice one.
Will load up Rebalance tonight then. Will copy all my saved game files first though, just incase I need to wipe and restart.
Thanks for all your help. Voyager awaits me.

Best to backup the Whole FL folder before you mess with mods. Then if something goes wrong then you just have to copy it back. 3 mins copying the FL folder will save you about 1 hour of grief when a mod fubar's your game files.

More important if you play online, then you wont have any files left over that could cause problems.

I was thinking fo just copying the game files, as they're the olny thing I've "Added" to the game folders as it were?
The whole game copied is about 1 gig or so...
Here's a question. Could you load the game twice? Have one modded version, one unmodded version?

Does this rebalance mod have Voyager in? Phasers and all?

I don't know about Voyager, but there's a seperate FLMM Voyager mod, I think also with nice working lasers.

To answer that last question, Yes, have fun!

Oh---and to that last last question, yes, I currently have 3 versions of Freelancer! I don't think that you can really install it into a different directory, just copy all the files to a new place.

Cheers Chiggy, I done that! Unmodded and Modded FL all the way!
Can't find Voyager patch though, and I can't get the beam weapons mod that comes with FMM working...

Post Thu Jul 17, 2003 10:40 pm

Don't think you need a Voyager patch, sells at different planets... The advanced beam mod doesn't work with Rebalance

You could download something with original content. Stuff that appeared in the mod first and doesnt use other mods stuff.

Something like (Free plug time) Hostile Universe.

I was never here, you never saw me.
