The reason you won't be able to tractor in the gold is that your cargo hold will be full, that's the reason for the tractor beam failure message, you get the same if you try to tractor in shield batteries and nanobots when you have the maximum. For some reason you can carry as many extra weapons and accessories as you like bar ammo for mines and missile launchers which have a max of 50.

Tractor beam failed means that you either have max bats or bots or your cargo hold is full. The latter is most likely why you can't get the gold.

My guess would be that you cargo hold is already full. The 'tractor beam failed' message only occurs when you can't beam something due to you already having too much of that Item.

So you most often get it for Shields and Nanobots, as well as cargo. There is no limit to beaming aboard guns as far as I can tell though.

i think i have a bug: the tractor beam failing thing happens every time i use the damn thing, but it still works!

Thanks a bunch, all you freeloaders. Yep. I had to conclude it was because I hadn't enough space, even tho' I have an Anubis ship and most of my cargo space free. I know what I'll do: I'll buy a great pig freighter in Cambridge, haul-ass back, get the gold, sell it and the freighter and get back to whackin' the baddies. Don't you just love this open-ended stuff. . . Second thoughts: I emptied my cargo bay, flew back (pre-save gold) and tractored the gold in. Was worth only 5,000-6,000 anway but, as I've said, Isn't it cool to have freedom to do most what you want?

Deth bird- When that happens its because certain things nearby can be picked up and so are tractored in but others cant and so you get the tracto failed message.

Example:
Freighter drops 2 turrets and 50 gold. You have a full cargo hold.
When you press 'b' the turrets come in which is where you see it.
Your hold is full so you cant get the gold so it says tractor failure.

That's absolutely right, couldn't agree more with all of you.

ERROR

See what you do have in your hold. You may have a lot of scrap metal, water or oxygen -- which don't sell for much. So Dump those and suck up more gold. Only problem is that about the time you get doing all of this, checking your hold etc ... some nasty pirate comes along and starts shooting the cr** out of you. Then it's panic time as you start pushing keys and trying to get into action before getting blown up.


p.s. Does strike me as strange that when you buy nanobots and shield batteries, the voice says "cargo loaded into hold". Then why can't I suck up more shield batteries when my hold is empty?
