Optimal Weapon Class

I'm still early in the game and all I have at my disposal is a Defender (HF). The ship info says that the optimal weapon class is 2, but it can accomodate class 4 weapons.

At one time I was using Class 3 weps on it, but I thought it was turning slowly, so I moved down to Class 2. Does this really make a difference?

What's the penalty for using higher class weapons? Does anyone actually pay attention to this, or should I just be installing the biggest guns money can buy?

Does Optimal Weapon Class apply to things like shields?

it mainly applies to your power drain. The lowers the class, the less it will drain. Your ship was designed with class 2's in mind but you can equip class 4's.

"On this ship you are to refer to me as Idiot, not you Captain. I mean... you know what I mean."

Yep, lower class weapons can fire longer and more often, so they may actually do more damage than a higher class. But in the early levels I loaded my ship with the heaviest weapons it could handle. I was firing potent blasts that destroyed any ship with two or three hits. Wasn't that easy to hit them though. My aim had to be perfect. It was the difference between firing a machine gun or a cannon at your enemy.

No, equiping your ship or how much cargo you have doesn't in anyway effect your shipturning. (Or I really mist something !!!)

@ McKracken: Pity, cos that would be a good idea... themore laden you ae, the poor your ship moves etc...

If it wasn't for the inky blackness of the night you wouldn't appreciate the brilliance of the stars...

Yes... but that would make the freighters even worse in turning... I think a lot of people would really hate that.
I think it wouldnt be very realistic anyway. 'This may be true (in real life) for a truck or ship, but in space without gravity or atmosphere???

Inertia still applies. The bigger the object, the more force it takes to make it move or stop.

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

hmmm....being a fairly decent modder i was thinking about making a mod that recognized speed as a part of the game...about the weapons...they probably aren't very heavy, but, what if you opened the weapon_equip.ini file and modified their mass, would that change the ship statistics...probably not ...maybe make each unit of cargo weigh something....but something small.......w/e

You guys all know mass has practically no application in space except for interacting with other objects.

Such as a ship running into another one.

You have to remember in space everything is totally weightless.

But Newton's 2nd law of motion states:-

F=ma (force = mass x acceleration)

So, to accelerate an ship with a mass twice that of a smaller one, requires twice the force. That means to speed it up, slow it down, or to change direction.

And as nukeIt said, inertia is still relevant in space!

LOL, duddddde I would like to know how ur mind works 'ph33rb0'

"You guys all know mass has practically no application in space except for interacting with other objects."

eh...ok

Mass & weight are different things. Weight has no application in most of space since it is dependant on gravity applied to an objects mass. An orbiting shuttle around earth does indeed weigh something becuase it's still subject to earths gravity all be it less than normal. The mass however is always the same and requires a set amount of thrust to accelerate, change direction etc.

What you said would make sence if talking about an objects shape. Having a streamlined ship would not make any differance unless interacting with other matter. A 'borg' ship would not work because although it would be great in open clear space it would be ripped appart by even a gas pocket if traveling at the low low speed of 30,000mph.

I have to much time on my hands. I thought this was comman knowledge anyway.

@ahealy
Please don't dust off old threads unless you have something to truly add and would benifit others. This one is close to a year old. Grave digging is frowned upon here.
