Well, before you buy a shield, you'd have to sell or at least dismount your current shield.
Dismount by clicking on the icon in the left upper corner of the shield/weapon-picture.
Than your ship must be able to mount the type of shield you want to buy. There's a level requirement and a max shield/weapon class, meaning that if your ship is capable of mounting max class 2 shields (like on a Civilian light fighter, wich you start out with) you can not mount a class 3 or higher.
Than there are Light fighter (LF) Heavy Fighter (HF) Very heavy Fighter (VHF) and Freighter (Fr) shields.
So I f you own a Light Fighter, you can not mount anything else than a LF type of shield.
About level requirements, they are for Guns and missiles and such, wich means you can not buy certain weapons if you level is not high enough. Also counts for ships.
Anyway, if you can not buy the weapon/shield you want, becouse all of the reasons above, the pictures for that item are grey-ish.

I don't know exactly what you mean, but you can only mount one shield at a time. (on unmodded fighterclass ships)

Shields are no problem to me. When u buy another ship, u end up with 2 shields, so u gotta sell one. Don't buy positron shields, they suck. I prefer gravitron shields.
