Ummm ... is he lying? Sorry, I may be a bit gullable, but with Microsoft, nothing would surprise me.

Does the patch reverse the lvl's, and if so, am I stuck having to level up the long way?

Sorry about that, just one of those days.
It has nothing to do with the leveling-up system, in fact I don't know at all what it's supost to do...
Check the Official Freelancer site for reliable info.
It will probably fix some bugs, I beleave mostly MP stuff.
Maybe the good old reinstall will solve the problem.

Patch 1.1 only addresses server issues. They go so far as to say that if you aren't running a server, there's no need to download the patch at all. You can play on a 1.1 server with your 1.0 game.

As for your particular problem, I doubt it's patch related. At least, I haven't heard this issue come up in regard to it. I did find a similar thread on the Tech Issues forum (Search engine? We don't need no stinkin' search engine!) No one had a definite answer, but the consensus seemed to be that a mod must've changed some character information. Look at your stats in-game - do you have "0 missions completed?" If so, there's your problem.

Sadly, the thread didn't provide any kind of fix, either. You might spend some more time sifting through old threads for an answer, I only provide a path.

I just punched "experience" into the search engine and limited the search to the technical issues forum, btw.

I experienced the same thing immediately after installing the 1.1 patch. You are effectively barred from carrying out missions in quite a few systems. The message in your stats window changes from saying " max level" to "mission required", but it doesn't seem to matter how many missions you complete, or how much money you make, you are stuck at 38. I haven't tried doing a re-install yet, but would advise any SP's to avoid the patch!!

I just re-installed FL and the problem is resolved!

Good old reinstall, typicaly

In any games where Microsoft is involved a reinstall will fix everything, even if it's related to your graphics card or some other hardware.
