I just got a gamepad working for FL the other night... anyone else try it? It works pretty nice w/ dual analog! Steer w/ left stick, aim w/ right.
I have a Logitech Wingman Cordless Rumblepad... the wingman software worked! I just had to select the Freelancer .exe, map the right stick to the mouse (under "axis properties"... not "select assignment", and make some new assignments to get the left stick to the asdw keys as turn and pitch. pitch and turn is a little shaky, but I think I can get it working better. Is there a way to turn off the auto-levelling stuff? I thought there was... something in the .ini maybe? It interferes a bit.
Steering and aiming are the same thing when using mouse flight. In the menu for control configuration, you can see that you can configure keys for up/down/left/right turning (steering), which let you turn your ship independently of the mouse pointer.
There is indeed a control setting to toggle auto-leveling. I mapped it to L on my keyboard, and usually turn it off when I enter a fight and back on once I'm done.

i have an old wingman warrior which i used the logitech software to get running with freelancer....
only prob is that after many years of abuse, its lost spring tension, centering has gone, hat switch only works in 2 positions....too many probs to be effective
so i got myself a numeric keypad, remapped the essential keys to the keypad, and use it in my left....
just saving money so i can get a space-ball...
Just my $0.02, but it could just be the cardamine talking.

Has anybody tried using a Sidewinder Gamepad or a Sidewinder Freestyle Pro? I don't have either, but I already have Sidewinder software for my Joystick and don't really want two gamepad system running in contrary to each other. But I like the idea of having one. Just want to make sure it works first.

Well I don't use a game pad but I have been using the Microsoft Strategic Comander. I'm still not where I want to be with it yet.... but am working on it ... I think it will serve me just fine once I get it fine tuned...
