Rediscovering Freelancer

Not that it matters much but I just wanted to share my recent experiences rediscovering Freelancer. I blasted through the single player campaign in a mad rush and got a little burned out. But I stayed in touch with these forums and have followed the progress of this game even though my interest had fallen off a bit.

Well tonight I thought I would see how my new video card drivers worked with a few games, so I slapped in the Freelancer disc. Once I got back to my saved game (New York system just having beaten the game), I figured I better pick a place to go to see how the game ran. So I set a few waypoints toward Rheinland space and just flew around. Got in some battles, did a little exploring, using turret view with mouse look to take in my surroundings... again, all to "see how the new drivers were." Well, two hours later, I'm kind of hooked again. While I'm not new to open ended games (one of my all time favorites is Darklands), I think the go anywhere do anything right after beating the game was a little overwhelming. But now I'm ready to go take in the sights and see what's out there.

I have a feeling that trading won't have too much interest for me in the long run because I still feel the economic model is a little stagnant, but I'm anxious to go explore all that's out there. Anyway, I've enjoyed my time here at lancers reactor and I'm having a blast getting back into the game.

Rebalance 1.6 was just released, might want to check that out. It's a real kick to fly a Tie-Fighter, X-Wing,Cylon Raider etc. etc. It makes for a very different game.

Cylon raider? Cool!

Are there any mods out there with a Colonial Viper? Always wanted to fly one of those ever since I watched BG as a little kid..

I saw the Vipers flying around, I think it was in Rheinland somewhere. I haven't been able to track down where they're sold at though. I saw a stealth infiltrator at Vogtland base. I gotta have that one.

In Rebalance 1.4b, the Vipers are part of the Liberty Navy. They can be bought on Los Angeles, CA.

Heh heh.. How appropriate! (Always thought BG was one of the better sci-fi television series to come out of Hollywood.)

I've been very curious about the rebalance mod. Has anyone spent a lot of time with it? Does it:

1) Improve gameplay?
2) Run stable?
3) Include any added spaceships (such as the a-wing... personally I would not want this)

I don't have much interest in the added space ship mods but I am happy to see the mod community so active. I can't program to save my life (luckily I've never had to) but I would love to see some kind of graphical front end for mods like how Morrowind does it. Basically it lists the mods you have, then you check the ones you want to run. That would be a great update to come from Digital Anvil, that way even if they never really support Freelancer officially anymore, the community could take over and implement changes rather easily.

3) OMG YES, "OMG ITS FULL OF SHIPS" should be the correct qoute

Is there a version of the rebalance mod without the added ships from Star Wars? While I'm glad to see the mod community producing such great stuff, the instant I saw an A Wing my suspension of disbelief would go right out the window. I'm probably in the minority, but I don't want to fly ships from other fictional settings in Freelancer.

One question: do NPC's fly these Star Wars ships? That'll turn me off, like awdougherty.
