Multiplayer Questions

I've been looking for ways to extend my enjoyment of the game for some time now. The most frequent suggestion I get is to try Multiplayer.

Now, I'm no newbie to the Web or to online gaming, but I've made up my mind to stay away from multi-player online games for some time now. I'm not anti-social or some kind of elitist. I just find that having to deal with 12 years olds with delusions of granduer or sociopaths who do nothing but player kills a bit tedious to deal with. But if FL multiplayer will give me a better experience once the SP missions are done, I might consider it.

So, what does MP do for me that SP will not. I know there will actually be other people to play with cooperatively, but beyond that, are the regions more balanced? are there more ships? Can I destroy bases? Or is it the same as the SP, but without the missions?

Huh?

Multiplayer is no different than single player in terms of game play. But don’t discount the interaction with other players. Even the ones you might not want to interact with make the game more interesting. Knowing there is someone who might mean you harm in the system you’re moving into certainly adds to the excitement. You will need to learn new techniques to survive.

In any MP game you will always get the crazy 12 year olds, not to mention the crazy >12 year olds who both get kicks from ruining other peoples games. In any MP game you will inevitably get more furious at some point that if you were playing SP. However this is balanced by the fact you will have more fun playing MP than you ever could playing SP. The one thing that doesnt seem to be a huge problem in FL is cheating - usually if someone wastes you will at least have a chance to repay the favour one day.

Most servers have a non-pvp in new york, or sometimes the whole of liberty. Use this to get up a few levels. Also consider joining a clan or at least getting involved in a posse of newer characters. That way you'll be a little safer. There is a thread in the MP forum called Fellow noobs where a few guys new to MP are talking about joining up for strength in numbers.

Whatever you do dont mouth off to anyone in a clan - no matter how unjustly they kill/dock camp you. It will ruin your game forever. Wait till you're hard as nails and challenge them to a duel

Servers have the option of disallowing PvP. I suggest you look for such a server to start with. Even with PvP enabled, remember that the death penalty in this game is pretty minimal. You lose any loose cargo, and that's it. It makes trade missions a little more risky, but that's about the only real penalty.
