I'd be inclined to agree with GNDN - anyone ever read "The Hunt for Red October"? The crews of submarines are not informed of what's going on, just the Commanding Officers...as a long-term Officer in the Liberty Navy, surely Walker would be able to pick his Officers, and as such pick others who he knew shared his views...or maybe I'm reading too much into it. Still, it's something to think about, isn't it?
As far as entering the ships is concerned, has anyone else noticed the AG spirals under the ships on the landing pads? I assumed that was how the pilots left their ships...if you look at the Starflier in the first cut-scene in Liberty (when Juni's talking to Trent about the first mission), isn't there a small hatch visible right where the spiraling is? Maybe my imagination, but still...I think "Beam me up, Scotty" would be a fairly accurate way of putting it! And getting back to larger ships would have to be either teleportation or shuttles, wouldn't it? I don't think anyone's going to be walking out there, anyway =OP
