It is the AI pilot level.

It is the "Threat rating" -- Type of ship, loadout and pilot skill combined.
You should be able to comfortably defeat 3 of those that have Threat Rating number equal to your current level.

Yep... In the manual, section 4. That number is labeled "vessel rank."

AHHHHHHH... see, in the MANUAL the number is in the BOTTOM right of the target reticle. In the GAME, it's in the TOP.

AFAIK that no. represents how much a pilot is worth not really the AI level.You'll usually find that even low-level ships have good AI like the Blood dragons or the Xenos starfliers & ships that don't seem to have much AI level at all like Nomads or Bretonia armed forces.It's basically how much the pilot is worth pertaining to what sort of equipment they have & the type of ship they have is worth as Cpbuja has pointed out.

I stand corrected. Calling the singlton approximation of their toughness based on ships, loadout, etc displayed there the AI "level" was inappropriate. It is as was said.

edit, oops forgot the non-OT bit, so impressed was I: I've *never* noticed that little number. Maybe that's partly why i get toasted so often...
